Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Tourism, grade: B, University of Gloucestershire, language: English, abstract: International sporting events have gained an enormous popularity and importance both as a product within the leisure industry and as a marketing tool in destination marketing in the competition for visitors, residents and businesses between cities. This dissertation examines the influence of such international sporting events on the image of the host country or host city. The FIFA World Cup 2006 serves as a case example, out of the host cities Hanover has been picked as an example. Within the dissertation the following research questions will be explored and answered: Does image change happen due to international sporting events? If so is it positive or negative? Does the image change seem to be the same for host country and host city? Are image changes related to the level of involvement and type of ecperience the people have? Do image changes due to international sporting events have an influence on the people's future travel plans? Should such sporting events therefore be of importance in destination management? The answers were derived of secondary and primary data; an online survey has been conducted by the author for the purpose of this dissertation in which over 400 people participated. The findings of this survey have been supported through findings of two further surveys, one undertaken on behalf of the German Tourism board and one by the international student organisation AIESEC, who also have been examining issues concerning the FIFA World Cup 2006 ."

Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: 70/100, Stellenbosch Universitiy (Economics), course: International Trade , language: English, abstract: The FIFA World Cup (WC) is one of the biggest sports events worldwide and the right to host one of them is a highly sought-after. The reasons for that are not only the excitement of the event and the media exposure of the host nation but also the promise of lasting effects on the country ́s economy. So, host nations and cities are expecting net gains from events like the FIFA WC (Bohlmann 2006). One important type of these possible effects is the attraction of tourists to the country (Allmers/Maennig 2009). This is especially the case for South Africa whose tourism industry is growing to a cornerstone of the SA economy and to one of the largest employers of the country (Rogerson 2009). Prior to the WC numerous predictions about the actual effects on the economy and the tourism in special were developed (Allmers/Maennig 2009, Bohrmann 2006). Next to the direct effects respectively the tourists arriving during the world cup some studies also predict a legacy effect of the WC which increases the tourist arrivals afterwards (Fourie/Santana-Gallego 2010). Hence, this essay will analyze the actual effects of the FIFA WC 2010 on the South African tourism industry compared to the predictions during the event and afterwards. The essay first outlines the importance of the tourism industry for the South African economy. Afterwards it takes a look at the research about the impacts of previous world cups and sports mega events in general before the direct effects of the world cup are examined and compared to the predictions. It is revealed that none of the partially very optimistic predictions could be reached. An analysis of the indirect or legacy effects of the world cup follows. Even if it is too early to measure long run effects it is shown that a strong effect on overseas tourism can be expected.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: 7 (2,3), Copenhagen Business School, course: Sports Economics, language: English, abstract: The assignment answers the question which impacts a mega sports event like the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany can have on a nation. Cultural, environmental and economic effects – or tangible and intangible effects – are analysed in this case. The cultural impact on Germany was significant. The supporting programme of the World Cup helped to increase Germany’s reputation all over the world and improved its hospitality image worldwide. Environmental aspects were in the focus during the World Cup and several important actions helped to solve problems like waste management, water consumption and electricity consumption. The sustainability of these actions has to be observed in the future. The economic aspect was less significant. Although Germany invested large sums in infrastructure and stadiums, and had earnings of 500 million Euros from tourists, the growth in GDP is negligible. This is a general problem in large economies, because a movement of GDP needs extremely high monetary items. But in conclusion the FIFA World Cup 2006 was a success. Not from an economic point of view but with regard to international relationships and the reputation of Germany. A mega sports event needs a careful planning and a high willingness to invest money in infrastructure and venues. Then the impact can be very positive and must not be measured only from a financial point of view.

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: After the era of apartheid, events, festivals and conferences provide exciting opportunities to market South Africa (SA) and its provinces, cities and towns as preferred tourist destination and to generate benefits for the local economy. The hosting of mega-sport events, such as the FIFA World Cup 2010 serves in addition with excellent public relations opportunities to attract tourists before, during and after the event. The exposure to international media and their audiences will have significant impact on the country s tourism industry and will contribute to increase growth and job creation, transformation and the alleviation of poverty. As a growing sub-sector of the tourism industry, the staging of events is also a great way to reduce the effects of tourist seasonality and is therefore becoming increasingly competitive. With a very positive forecast for tourism influx in 2010, SA requires in the preparatory phase and during the event a high level of professionalism to ensure the country s readiness and show its responsibility towards its people, neighbouring countries, soccer fans and the event itself. To induce sustainable benefits from staging the FIFA World Cup 2010, SA s stakeholders elaborated initiatives and programmes to support the countries overall economic objectives. SA will face challenges and setbacks, but it will prepare for the event diligently and host what is known the world s biggest soccer festival. In the following paper I will present the current position and future outlook for SA s tourism industry in chapter two. Chapter three will clarify the terms sport tourism and its general impact on the tourism industry. SA s experience with hosting sport events will also be depicted. After an introduction to the FIFA and the FIFA World Cup 2010 in chapter four, I will conduct a detailed presentment (chapter five) of the predicted short- and long-term impacts of this mega-event on the country s tourism industry. Herewith I will identify the related challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, in chapter six, the reader will get an elaborated summary of the current preparatory phase for the FIFA World Cup 2010, launched initiatives and projects focusing on tourist, economic and socio-cultural impacts in SA. With my conclusions in chapter seven I will complete the paper. Inhaltsverzeichnis:Table of Contents: Rights ProtectionIII Table of ContentsIV List of FiguresV List of [...]

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,8, International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef - Bonn, language: English, abstract: As research around the impacts of Mega Sport Events on host cities and regions reached is peaking in the aftermath of the FIFA World Cup 2006, the UEFA European Football Championship 2008 and the Beijing Summer Games 2008 the topic of cooperation and networking has been widely neglected in regard to MSEs. With the focus on the tourism industry of hosting regions, this work tries to start to change this, as an exploratory approach towards finding out more about the interrelationship of those two topics in tourism. As both, MSEs and cooperation are gaining more and more interest within tourism research this should also be seen as an approach to combine both to motivate further research. Methodologically this is realized by conducting expert interview with five industry experts with valuable experience in preparing, hosting and also benefiting from a Mega Sport Event. The expert interview, as the primary research part of this work is based on the cooperation concept of Axelrod's game theory. This basis was used to design, conduct and analyze the primary research part of this thesis. Essentially, the thesis should be interpreted as a scientific approach to present the combination of the topics of Mega Sport Events and cooperation in tourism.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Communications - Broadcast and entertainment, grade: 1,0, , language: English, abstract: It doesn’t matter if you are an enthusiastic fan of a soccer club, a professional worldclass athlete, the owner of a sports association or even “just” a person that follows the daily news about sport affaires: Sport has become one of the major topics of (almost) everybody’s life in the twenty‐first century. Besides, sport can be related to as many aspects of life as possible. Nowadays, sportive activities or even sport events are significant motivations for planning your holidays and that is why sport and tourism achieve high synergies together. Sport has also emerged as global mass entertainment, and is now one of the most powerful and far‐reaching communications platforms in the world. Global sport events offer the capacity and possibility to reach vast numbers of people worldwide. By extension, high‐performance athletes have become global as they sell themselves to the bright public. And as a result, they become powerful ambassadors, spokespeople and role‐models. The creation of the term “sportainment” reflects the increasing importance of the entertaining sports industry. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to examine the relation between sports and entertainment, sports and tourism as well as entertaining sports and tourism. I am going to concentrate my focus on the following questions: – What is the importance of sports and how can it be related to tourism? – What is “sportainment” and how can its relevance be described in the twenty‐first century? – How does “sportainment” influence tourism? – How does “sportainment” influence international sport events? Hence, the first two chapters build the theoretical framework of this paper. Chapter two examines the importance of sports and the rising appearance of sports as tourism. Chapter three explains the term “sportainment”, gives examples and finally relates it to international tourism. Chapter four analyses the Olympic Winter Games of Vancouver 2010 as a global project towards an entertaining sport event and examines its tourism impacts.

Investments in sport, events and tourism in cities and wider regions are part of nascent regeneration strategies linked to transitioning economic bases and place images. While it is important to consider physical regeneration, there is a range of subsequent benefits and opportunities brought about through regeneration that considers social impacts, communities and how investments and developments influence how people interact in transformed spaces. This book brings together a collection focusing on the diverse range of approaches and perspectives of regeneration. Twelve chapters outline and bring together critical perspectives of regeneration from scholars in different parts of the world. This collection critically assesses some of the key factors impacting upon regeneration initiatives in relation to sport, events and tourism. By doing so, this book assesses if new opportunities have arisen from developments, increasing the demands and needs of locals and tourists, or if transformations result in exclusion - thus challenging who regeneration is for. This book will be valuable reading for students and academics interested in tourism studies, events planning, sport and leisure studies or development studies, as well as the wider social sciences.
