Educators, are you ready to meet the challenge of cultivating the next generation of engineers in a post-COVID-19 context? Current engineering student cohorts are unique to their predecessors: they are more diverse and have experienced unprecedented disruption to their education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They will also play a more significant role in contributing to global sustainability efforts. Innovating engineering education is of vital importance for preparing students to confront society’s most significant sustainability issues: our future depends on it. Advancing Engineering Education Beyond COVID: A Guide for Educators offers invaluable insights on topics such as implementing active-learning activities in hybrid modes; developing effective and engaging online resources; creating psychologically safe learning environments that support academic achievement and mental health; and embedding sustainability within engineering education. Students’ own perspectives of online learning are also incorporated, with the inclusion of a chapter authored by undergraduate engineering students. This book consolidates the expertise of leading authorities within engineering education, providing an essential resource for educators responsible for shaping the next generation of engineers in a post-COVID-19 world.

This book examines quality teaching in professional education in the fields of engineering and international knowledge structures. The second of a two-volume series, the editors and contributors structure the book around case studies which highlight the elements constituting good practice within professional education. While there is no one specific route to prepare well-qualified professionals, this volume explores the decisions the academics responsible for delivering this education make to ensure quality curricula. Ultimately, the key to effective preparations rests with the value employers place on the focus, emphasis and balance between the academic and practical in relation to their own expectations for skills that graduates must have. The second volume in this collection will appeal to students and scholars of professional pedagogy, and engineering pedagogy more specifically.

This report summarises the views and opinions of the Engineers Australia Queensland Division and draws on preexisting literature (both government and non-government) that documents the problems currently faced by the Australian education system in providing STEM education to Australian youth. The aim of this report is to make recommendations which have the potential to improve the STEM literacy of Queensland students, and enable Queensland to be more competitive in the knowledge based economy. The recommendations made by Engineers Australia can be grouped into four key themes including: 1. A strategic vision for STEM education: More positive and effective policy and programs are needed to give priority to STEM education issues. One-off projects are not enough. 2. Planning requires data: A long-term projection of the Stateâs future needs for STEM professionals needs to be undertaken. Research into what influences students to continue with STEM studies is also needed to feed into STEM marketing and promotion strategies. 3. Quality and quantity of teachers: More teachers comfortable and capable of teaching STEM need to be grown and supported for both the primary and secondary education systems. 4. Linking industry and educators: Government, industry, professional associations and educators, including schools and universities, need better connections and linkages to support the professional development of teachers, STEM programs in schools and the delivery of both classroom and off-site STEM education. [p.2].
