Visions And Ideas Of Europe During The First World War written by Jan Vermeiren and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Europe categories.

Given the destruction and suffering caused by more than four years of industrialised warfare and economic hardship, scholars have tended to focus on the nationalism and hatred in the belligerent countries, holding that it led to a fundamental rupture of any sense of European commonality and unity. It is the central aim of this volume to correct this view and to highlight that many observers saw the conflict as a 'European civil war', and to discuss what this meant for discourses about Europe. Bringing together a remarkable range of compelling and highly original topics, this collection explores notions, images, and ideas of Europe in the midst of catastrophe.

The New Comparative Economic History written by T. J. Hatton and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Economic history categories.

Essays by internationally prominent economists examine long run cross-country economic trends from the perspective of New Comparative Economic History, an approach pioneered by Harvard economist Jeffrey G. Williamson. The innovative approach to economic history known as the New Comparative Economic History represents a distinct change in the way that many economic historians view their role, do their work, and interact with the broader economics profession. The New Comparative Economic History reflects a belief that economic processes can best be understood by systematically comparing experiences across time, regions, and, above all, countries. It is motivated by current questions that are not nation specific--the sources of economic growth, the importance of institutions, and the impact of globalization--and focuses on long-run trends rather than short-run ups and downs in economic activity. The essays in this volume offer a New Economic Comparative History perspective on a range of topics and are written in honor of Jeffrey G. Williamson, the most distinguished and influential scholar in the field. The contributors, prominent American and European economists, consider such topics as migration, education, and wage convergence; democracy and protectionism in the nineteenth century; trade and immigration policies in labor-scarce economies; and the effect of institutions on European productivity and jobs.

Management Challenges in the 21st Century looks afresh at the future of management thinking and practice. The content revolves around two fundamental issues that are occuring simultaneously: changes in the world economy, and shifts in the practice of management. These developments, especially in developed countries are crucial in exploring and understanding the challenges of the future. This volume focuses on the key questions for all business: What are the new realities? What new policies are required of companies and executives in order to deal with these changes. Facing a whole swathe of issues head-on in his usual clear-sighted style, Drucker offers up a prescient and informed analysis that will help every executive to build a proactive strategy for the future.

In April 2013, the International Network on Innovative Apprenticeship (INAP) hosted its fifth international conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, in co-operation with the International Labor Organization (ILO), bringing together researchers, policy makers, and practitioners from 34 nations. The title of the conference - "Apprenticeship in a Globalized World: Premises, Promises and Pitfalls" - points out the need for apprenticeship to deliver on its promise of workplace skills and for it to develop and change as world economies develop. An international exchange of ideas among researchers from all over the world is necessary to identify cases of good practice and facilitate the transfer of knowledge and innovation, also within the frame of informal apprenticeships. This book, a summary of the papers presented and discussed at the Johannesburg conference, is split up equally into five key topics: Introducing Apprenticeship: Backgrounds, Changes, and Difficulties * Enabling Learning Opportunities in Workplaces and Informal Contexts * Competence Assessment and Development * Managing Transitions from VET into the World of Work * Curriculum Design, Apprenticeships, and National Qualification Frameworks. Minutes To Midnight written by Paul Dukes and has been published by Anthem Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with History categories.

The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 by a group of atomic scientists to symbolise the perils facing humanity from nuclear weapons. In 2007 it was set at five minutes before the final bell, including for the first time the threat of climate change as well as new developments in the life sciences and nanotechnology. This book aims at an analysis of the evolution of our present predicament throughout the Anthropocene Era beginning in 1763, making special reference to the history of the period, the study of the subject and major advances in the natural sciences. Adam Smith and Adam Ferguson set out the basis for a scientific approach to the pre-industrial stages of historical development in the Enlightenment of the late eighteenth century, when the American and French Revolutions created a vocabulary of modernity. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as the industrial revolution unfolded in several stages, nationalism, imperialism and totalitarianism were among the phenomena impeding the update of the Enlightenment programme as well as the fulfilment of the aspirations of 1776 and 1789. Our present predicament demands a rigorous examination of its origins and an assertion of a scientific pandisciplinary approach involving history and other academic specialisations.
