Despite the extraordinary advances in digital and communication technology over recent years, we know very little about the way these complex systems affect everyday work and interaction. This book seeks to explore these issues through a series of video-based field studies. It begins by discussing the introduction of basic information systems in general medical practice and ends with an exploration of interpersonal communication in advanced media spaces; in the process also looking at news production, the control room of London Underground and computer aided design in architectural practice. Social interaction forms a particular focus of these studies as they explore the way individuals use various tools and technologies and coordinate their actions and activities with each other. The authors also show how video-based field studies of work and interaction can inform the design, development and deployment of new technology, in this valuable new resource for academics, researchers and practitioners.

Where The Action Is written by Paul Dourish and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-08-20 with Computers categories.

Computer science as an engineering discipline has been spectacularly successful. Yet it is also a philosophical enterprise in the way it represents the world and creates and manipulates models of reality, people, and action. In this book, Paul Dourish addresses the philosophical bases of human-computer interaction. He looks at how what he calls "embodied interaction"—an approach to interacting with software systems that emphasizes skilled, engaged practice rather than disembodied rationality—reflects the phenomenological approaches of Martin Heidegger, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and other twentieth-century philosophers. The phenomenological tradition emphasizes the primacy of natural practice over abstract cognition in everyday activity. Dourish shows how this perspective can shed light on the foundational underpinnings of current research on embodied interaction. He looks in particular at how tangible and social approaches to interaction are related, how they can be used to analyze and understand embodied interaction, and how they could affect the design of future interactive systems.

Data Protection Around The World written by Elif Kiesow Cortez and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-20 with Law categories.

This book provides a snapshot of privacy laws and practices from a varied set of jurisdictions in order to offer guidance on national and international contemporary issues regarding the processing of personal data and serves as an up-to-date resource on the applications and practice-relevant examples of data protection laws in different countries. Privacy violations emerging at an ever-increasing rate, due to evolving technology and new lifestyles linked to an intensified online presence of ever more individuals, required the design of a novel data protection and privacy regulation. The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) stands as an example of a regulatory response to these demands. The authors included in this book offer an in-depth analysis of the national data protection legislation of various countries across different continents, not only including country-specific details but also comparing the idiosyncratic characteristics of these national privacy laws to the GDPR. Valuable comparative information on data protection regulations around the world is thus provided in one concise volume. Due to the variety of jurisdictions covered and the practical examples focused on, both academics and legal practitioners will find this book especially useful, while for compliance practitioners it can serve as a guide regarding transnational data transfers. Elif Kiesow Cortez is Senior Lecturer at the International and European Law Program at The Hague University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands.

Thoughtful Interaction Design written by Jonas Lowgren and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-01-26 with Computers categories.

The authors of Thoughtful Interaction Design go beyond the usual technical concerns of usability and usefulness to consider interaction design from a design perspective. The shaping of digital artifacts is a design process that influences the form and functions of workplaces, schools, communication, and culture; the successful interaction designer must use both ethical and aesthetic judgment to create designs that are appropriate to a given environment. This book is not a how-to manual, but a collection of tools for thought about interaction design. Working with information technology—called by the authors "the material without qualities"—interaction designers create not a static object but a dynamic pattern of interactivity. The design vision is closely linked to context and not simply focused on the technology. The authors' action-oriented and context-dependent design theory, drawing on design theorist Donald Schön's concept of the reflective practitioner, helps designers deal with complex design challenges created by new technology and new knowledge. Their approach, based on a foundation of thoughtfulness that acknowledges the designer's responsibility not only for the functional qualities of the design product but for the ethical and aesthetic qualities as well, fills the need for a theory of interaction design that can increase and nurture design knowledge. From this perspective they address the fundamental question of what kind of knowledge an aspiring designer needs, discussing the process of design, the designer, design methods and techniques, the design product and its qualities, and conditions for interaction design.
