In today’s digital era, the emergence of digital libraries, collections, and repositories stands as a significant advancement. Across various organizations, there’s a notable shift toward digitization driven by both technological advancements and the proliferation of vast amounts of data, texts, artworks, and other collections. With information volumes reaching unprecedented levels, the imperative to organize it in digital formats becomes apparent. This digital transformation has given rise to a pervasive digital culture, particularly evident in academic libraries, museums, and nonprofit organizations. This culture profoundly influences how information is accessed, utilized, and organized. The book addresses key aspects of this digital paradigm, including digitization processes, open access principles, and the protocols and standards governing the utilization of digital information. It examines the broader landscape of digital libraries, repositories, and collections found in galleries and museums. Moreover, the book explores the evolving skill sets required by users in adapting to these digital advancements, as well as the standards necessary for implementing digital organizational structures. By taking a comprehensive view, it highlights both the advantages and challenges posed by these digital developments, offering insights into their multifaceted impacts on contemporary society.

Digital libraries usually allow users to access their collections through keyword-based retrieval. While such access paths come with moderate implementation and maintenance costs, they also come with limited expressiveness. This has two reasons: 1) expression of relations between keywords is challenging, and 2) exploratory search with variables is usually not supported at all. Inspired by the way humans exchange knowledge through oral or written narratives, this thesis proposes narrative information access to tackle those limitations. The central idea is that users formulate information needs as short narratives of interest, basically a graph pattern with relevant concepts and their interactions. Those patterns are then bound against a digital library's content, e.g., its document collection. In contrast to querying knowledge bases, narrative information access enforces a context-compatible information fusion to ensure valid results. This fusion only combines pieces of information whose validity refers to the same or similar settings. In this thesis, narrative information access has been realized in the use case of the pharmaceutical domain. Moreover, we propose, implement, and evaluate practical nearly-unsupervised information extraction workflows, novel implicit context models, and a full-fledged discovery system for narrative information access.

The International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL) is an annual international forum for participants to exchange research results, innovative ideas, and state-of-the-art developments in digital libraries. Built upon the successes of the first four ICADL conferences, the 5th ICADL Conference in Singapore was aimed at further strengthening the position of ICADL as a premier digital library conference that draws high quality papers and presentations from all around the world, while meeting the needs and interests of digital library communities in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme of the conference, “Digital Libraries: People, Knowledge & Technology,” reflects the shared belief of the organizers that success in the development and implementation of digital libraries lies in the achievement of three key areas: the richness and depth of content to meet the needs of the communities they intend to serve; the technologies that are employed to build user-centered environments through organization, interaction, and provision of access to that content; and the human elements of management policies, maintenance, and vision necessary to keep pace with new content, new technologies, and changing user needs.
