This volume revisits what we know about the relationship between journalists and their sources. By asking new questions, employing novel methodologies, and confronting sweeping changes to journalism and media, the contributors reinvigorate the conversation about who gets to speak through the news. It challenges established thinking about how journalists use sources, how sources influence journalists, and how these patterns relate to the power to represent the world to news audiences. Useful to both newcomers and scholars familiar with the topic, the chapters bring together leading journalism scholars from across the globe. Through a variety of methods, including surveys, interviews, content analysis, case studies and newsroom observations, the chapters shed light on attitudes and practices in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Belgium and Israel. Special attention is paid to the changing context of newswork. Shrinking newsgathering resources coupled with a growth in public relations activities have altered the source-journalist dynamic in recent years. At the same time, the rise of networked digital technologies has altered the barriers between journalists and news consumers, leading to unique forms of news with different approaches to sourcing. As the media world continues to change, this volume offers a timely reevaluation of news sources.

News On The Internet written by David Tewksbury and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-24 with Political Science categories.

Online news sites play an ever-pervasive role in the daily gathering and flow of political information. Media has always played an intermediary role in the way that citizens receive and process news, but, with the speed of information transmission, the segmentation of news sources, and the rise of citizen journalism, issues of authority, audience, and even the definition of "news" have shifted and become blurred. News on the Internet synthesizes research on developing and current patterns of online news provision with the literature on traditional, offline media to create a conceptual map for understanding the way that public affairs and news are presented and consumed on the internet. Tewksbury and Rittenberg look at the dual role of the internet as a source of authoritative news and as a vehicle for citizens in contemporary democracies to create and share political information. Throughout, they address the tension between the benefits of internet news provision, specifically increased citizen engagement, and the negative, perhaps counterintuitive, effects: the fragmentation of knowledge and polarization of opinion in contemporary democracies. News on the Internet focuses on these points of conflict and contradiction in the online news environment and offers conclusions and predictions for how these phenomena will develop in the future.

This ready-reference guide to international online, CD-ROM, and Internet sources saves the reader valuable time finding news information. With its simple to use charts and alphabetic listings, this guide provides quick answers to questions, such as: * Which online and CD-ROM databases provide news information from Russia? * Which online services have strong Asian news coverage? * Is there a CD-ROM database providing news from Switzerland? and * Where is a 1993 story from The Chicago Tribuneavailable online? Focusing on commercial and economic news as well as current affairs, this guide will be of particular interest to journalists and commercial researchers. Sections on news online and CD-ROM databases are organized by region and country, and help the reader identify potentially useful sources by describing the language(s) of the source, the date range covered, and the format of the records and providers. Product files of all the online databases and CD-ROMs listed make up the third section of the guide, presenting contact details of the provider, the subjects covered by the product, and the geographic focus of the file. To find out more about a particular product, an alphabetic list of all the publishers and vendors of the online services and CD-ROMs in this reference will provide a useful point of contact. A country by country list of the World Wide Web sites providing news information makes up the final section of the book. This gives URLs for the Web sites of specific newspapers and other news based sites.
