Design of Industrial Information Systems presents a body of knowledge applicable to many aspects of industrial and manufacturing systems. New software systems, such as Enterprise Resource Planning, and new hardware technologies, such as RFID, have made it possible to integrate what were separate IT databases and operations into one system to realize the greatest possible operational efficiencies. This text provides a background in, and an introduction to, the relevant information technologies and shows how they are used to model and implement integrated IT systems. With the growth of courses in information technology offered in industrial engineering and engineering management programs, the authors have written this book to show how such computer-based knowledge systems are designed and used in modern manufacturing and industrial companies. - Introduces Data Modeling and Functional Architecture Design, with a focus on integration for overall system design - Encompasses hands-on approach, employing many in-chapter exercises and end-of-chapter problem sets with case studies in manufacturing and service industries - Shows the reader how Information Systems can be integrated into a wider E-business/Web-Enabled Database business model - Offers applications in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)

One of the most important uses of computers is (as an aid to managers) to provide up-to-date information to efficiently run their organizations. Of the total number of computers installed in the world today, over eighty percent are used in organizations for management information systems. It is thus very important for all students of management, commerce and computer science to know how to design computer-based information systems to aid management. This introductory text gives a lucid, self-contained presentation to students on how to analyse and design information systems for use by managers. Information Systems Analysis and Design (also known as System Analysis and Design) is a compulsory subject for MCA, BCA, B.Com. and B.E. students of Computer Science and Information Technology. This book covers the syllabus of this course and that of the DOEACC (Level A) examination. Thoroughly classroom tested and evolved out of twenty years of teaching Information Systems Design course at IIT Kanpur and IISc., Bangalore, this book presents real Indian examples. In this third edition every chapter has been updated, besides the addition of a new chapter on Use Case Method to reflect the rapid changes taking place in designing information systems. This book has been used to prepare learning material for the course Systems Analysis and Design for the National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The author has delivered 40 lectures on this topic which are available on YouTube. Besides, the book also contains supplementary materials such as PPTs and objective questions which are available on www.phindia.com/rajaraman_ADIS. KEY FEATURES: Covers comprehensively systems analysis and design. Discusses object-oriented modelling of information systems. A chapter on Electronic Commerce is unique to this book. Presents a detailed case study of a complete information system. Includes supplementary web material.

The overall mission of this book is to provide a comprehensive understanding and coverage of the various theories and models used in IS research. Specifically, it aims to focus on the following key objectives: To describe the various theories and models applicable to studying IS/IT management issues. To outline and describe, for each of the various theories and models, independent and dependent constructs, reference discipline/originating area, originating author(s), seminal articles, level of analysis (i.e. firm, individual, industry) and links with other theories. To provide a critical review/meta-analysis of IS/IT management articles that have used a particular theory/model. To discuss how a theory can be used to better understand how information systems can be effectively deployed in today’s digital world. This book contributes to our understanding of a number of theories and models. The theoretical contribution of this book is that it analyzes and synthesizes the relevant literature in order to enhance knowledge of IS theories and models from various perspectives. To cater to the information needs of a diverse spectrum of readers, this book is structured into two volumes, with each volume further broken down into two sections. The first section of Volume 1 presents detailed descriptions of a set of theories centered around the IS lifecycle, including the Success Model, Technology Acceptance Model, User Resistance Theories, and four others. The second section of Volume 1 contains strategic and economic theories, including a Resource-Based View, Theory of Slack Resources, PortfolioTheory, Discrepancy Theory Models, and eleven others. The first section of Volume 2 concerns socio-psychological theories. These include Personal Construct Theory, Psychological Ownership, Transactive Memory, Language-Action Approach, and nine others. The second section of Volume 2 deals with methodological theories, including Critical Realism, Grounded Theory, Narrative Inquiry, Work System Method, and four others. Together, these theories provide a rich tapestry of knowledge around the use of theory in IS research. Since most of these theories are from contributing disciplines, they provide a window into the world of external thought leadership.

Designing Organizations: 21st Century Approaches is a benchmark publication in the field of organization design. The recent development in organization design has been sporadic; hence, this book will be an important step in creating more thoughtful research and stronger empirical analyses that take advantage of advances in estimation methods allowing for more complex causal modeling and stimulation technologies. Featured in the book are the more practical elements of implementing OD in organizations. The chapter material is organized into five sections: (1) Putting Contingency Theory in its Place, (2) Focus on Individuals who make up the Organization, (3) Innovation Processes and Organization Design, (4) Adaptation and Technology, and (5) Design for Performance. The book will be a broad discussion of topics in the field, but still each individual chapter will provide in-depth analysis of the topic.

This book is a venture in the worlds of modeling and of metamodeling. At this point, I will not reveal to readers what constitutes metamodeling. Suf fice it to say that the pitfalls and shortcomings of modeling can be cured only if we resort to a higher level of inquiry called metainquiry and metadesign. We reach this level by the process of abstraction. The book contains five chapters from my previous work, Applied General Systems Theory (Harper and Row, London and New York, First Edition 1974, Second Edition 1978). More than ten years after its publication, this material still appears relevant to the main thrust of system design. This book is dedicated to all those who are involved in changing the world for the better. In a way we all are involved in system design: from the city manager who struggles with the problems of mass transportation or the consolidation of a city and its suburbs to the social worker who tries to provide benefits to the urban poor. It includes the engineer who designs the shuttle rockets. It involves the politician engaged in drafting a bill to recycle containers, or one to prevent pesticide contamination of our food. The politician might even need system design to chart his or her own re-election campaign.
