Tanto desde la izquierda como desde la derecha, el léxico dominante sobre la globalización destaca el antagonismo entre lo global y lo nacional, y realiza descripciones razonables e intuitivamente satisfactorias de un mundo en proceso de transformación. Sobre ese léxico se han construido teorías y explicaciones atractivas, que, como señala la autora de esta obra, "tienen la capacidad de encandilar y, por lo tanto, de producir una gran penumbra a su alrededor". Indagar en esa zona de sombras, allí donde las explicaciones intuitivas son esquivas y erróneas, es el propósito de este libro, que parte de la constatación de que si bien el proceso de globalización es intenso, la "globalidad formal" es muy escasa: existen pocas e imperfectas instituciones globales. ¿Cómo se produce el proceso de globalización por fuera de esas instituciones? En primer término, señala Saskia Sassen, por "la labor que realizan cada vez más estados nacionales para desnacionalizar en parte sus marcos jurídicos e institucionales", ya que son, en efecto, algunas capacidades que produjo el proceso de construcción del Estado las que hoy hacen posible la era global, pero lo hacen "desnacionalizando" aquello que se ha constituido históricamente como nacional, ya sean las políticas de gobierno, los capitales, las subjetividades políticas, los espacios urbanos o las estructuras temporales. Sassen analiza el modo en que los tres componentes de toda sociedad -territorio, autoridad y derechos- han cambiado en sí mismos y en sus relaciones a lo largo de tres "ensamblajes" históricos fundamentales: el medieval, el nacional y el global. Para ello, estudia la emergencia del Estado-nación a través del reposicionamiento sustancial de determinadas capacidades medievales; analiza las condiciones políticas, económicas, legales o tecnológicas inscritas en nuevas lógicas organizativas que van de lo nacional hacia lo global, y examina las intersecciones puntuales entre lo territorial, la autoridad y los derechos, con especial atención al papel de las nuevas tecnologías digitales. 'Territorio, autoridad y derechos' es una obra de largo aliento, en la que la perspectiva histórica y el trabajo sobre un enorme material empírico y teórico se suman para ofrecer una potente explicación de la transformación fundacional a la que asistimos, a la vez que brinda las herramientas para el análisis de los cambios futuros.
