El senador y prefecto Símaco fue el último gran orador romano dentro de la tradición clásica. Quinto Aurelio Símaco (h. 340-h. 402 d.C.) fue, además de prefecto de Roma, un destacado orador y prosista. Perteneció a una de las más distinguidas familias senatoriales romanas, que poseía grandes territorios en África, Numidia, Sicilia y el sur de Italia. Se puso dos veces del bando de un emperador usurpador: Máximo en el 383 y Eugenio en el 392-4. En ambas ocasiones logró congraciarse con Teodosio después de la derrota y muerte del adversario (Teodosio necesitaba su apoyo, pues era una de las cabezas visibles de la clase senatorial). Símaco era pagano, y es una ironía de la historia que fuera él quien recomendara a san Agustín para el puesto de profesor de retórica en Milán. Los Informes están extraídos del libro décimo de su correspondencia. El más conocido de ellos es el que, en su calidad de prefecto, dirigió al emperador Valentiniano II, en el cual defiende las antiguas instituciones religiosas frente al auge del cristianismo. Le insta a devolver al edificio del Senado el Altar de la Victoria, símbolo de la grandeza de Roma donde los senadores ofrecían incienso al inicio de las sesiones desde tiempos de Augusto, y que Constantino II y Graciano habían ordenado retirar por considerarlo una ofensa al cristianismo. El famoso informe de Símaco es una equilibrada petición de tolerancia religiosa para evitar una uniformidad impuesta y de respeto por las tradiciones del pasado. En cuanto a los discursos, Símaco fue considerado uno de los grandes oradores de su tiempo. Se admiraba su erudición y su atención a los clásicos de la literatura romana. De los ocho discursos suyos que conservamos en estado fragmentario, dos son panegíricos dirigidos a Valentiniano, uno al hijo de éste y coemperador Graciano, dos discursos pronunciados en el Senado (proclaman el alivio de este órgano ante el nuevo acercamiento político entre el Senado y el emperador) y otros tres en el Senado en nombre de particulares. Por su correspondencia y por otras referencias sabemos de muchos otros discursos pronunciados por Símaco y tal vez reunidos en edición completa que no se conservan.
