Dit boek kwam tot stand binnen de context van het onderzoeksproject Ruimte en beleid: ingenieurs, architecten en het ruimtelijke beleid van de overheden 1750-1830. Aanvankelijk opgevat als begeleider bij een wisseltentoonstelling, biedt het boek doorheen introducerende essays een synthetisch perspectief op twee kernvraagstukken uit dit onderzoeksproject: enerzijds de emancipatie, professioneel en maatschappelijk, van de architect en de ingenieur, anderzijds het spanningsveld overheid - architectuur en ingenieurskunde. Deze thema's hebben vandaag, meer dan twee eeuwen na de Verlichting, niets aan actualiteit ingeboet. De behandelde vraagstukken klinken in alle opzichten 'modern', ook op onderwijskundig vlak. Wie zich afvraagt hoe het komt dat architectuur en stedenbouw vandaag in ons land bloeiende universitaire disciplines zijn, krijgt hier een beeld van de complexe wortels die hieraan ten grondslag liggen. Misschien even verrassend is de onmiskenbare aura van het succes die de architectuur en de ingenieurskunde uit de Zuidelijke Nederlanden op het einde van de 18de en in het begin van de 19de eeuw omgeeft. Dit nauwelijks bekende aspect van onze nationale geschiedenis verdient het bijzonder in de verf gezet te worden.
