Den Anlass dazu bieten haufig die hohen Konfliktkosten (jedes Jahr in Milliardenhohe) und die hohe Arbeitsbelastung gerade von Fuhrungskraften. Dass durch eine Professionalisierung der Konfliktbearbeitung mit starkerer Betonung der Interessenausgleichsverfahren (insbesondere Verhandlungen) in Unternehmen erhebliche Kostenvorteile erzielt werden konnen, gilt mittlerweile als gesichert. Schon 1998 belegte eine Studie von Pricewaterhouse und Cornell University, dass 89,2% der befragten Unternehmen durch den gezielten Einsatz mediativer Konfliktbehandlung messbare Einsparungen erzielt hatten. Eine Marktanalyse von Zweisicht bei 150 deutschen Unternehmen ergab denn auch bereits im Jahr 2003, dass zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon 20% der befragten Unternehmen Mediation nutzten, weitere 25% planten deren Einsatz.
