This book sets out to restore the concept of healing to its place within and beyond pain medicine, in chapters authored by keynote speakers to the British Pain Society's Philosophy and Ethics Special Interest Group. Exploring psychological, spiritual and creative approaches, contributors reflect on therapeutic avenues ranging from the deliberate use of the placebo response and the importance of a caring relationship between patient and practitioner, to the use of knitting as a therapeutic tool. Barriers to the flow of healing such as practitioners' careless use of language and cultural attitudes are identified and contrasted with the need to understand the first-person perspectives of people who are suffering. This book will provide hope and inspiration both to people who have become disillusioned with conventional medical approaches to the relief of their pain, and to health professionals sadly aware of the frequent inadequacy of their efforts to help them.

Nearly forty years after its original publication, one of the most influential textbooks on modern pain management is available again for today's generation, in a unique and enhanced edition. Now complemented by expert, chapter-by-chapter commentaries from leading authorities on psychologically-oriented pain management and pain-associated disability, Fordyce's Behavioral Methods for Chronic Pain and Illness, an IASP publication, blends Dr. Fordyce's pioneering behavioral concepts with modern research and clinical practice. This innovative title is ideal for clinicians and researchers involved in the multidisciplinary assessment, treatment, and management of pain and pain-associated disorders, as well as anyone interested in behavioral approaches to chronic pain and illness. Throughout his long and illustrious career, Wilbert (Bill) Fordyce made major contributions to the health and well-being of those who suffered from chronic illnesses. As a clinical psychologist working in rehabilitation medicine, he put health psychology on the map for those who had chronic pain and began the cognitive/behavioral approach to pain management. Excelling in research, teaching, and patient care, he was a founding member of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and the American Pain Society (APS), lectured worldwide, and received numerous awards and honors in his field. His seminal book, Behavioral Methods for Chronic Pain and Illness, was originally published in 1976 and opened a new era in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain. This republication with contemporary commentaries is an indispensable resource for a biopsychosocial approach to the management of chronic pain.

Pain is a leading cause of disability globally. The dramatic increase in opioid prescriptions within the past decade in the United States has contributed to the opioid epidemic the country currently faces, magnifying the need for longer term solutions to treat pain. The substantial burden of pain and the ongoing opioid crisis have attracted increased attention in medical and public policy communities, resulting in a revolution in thinking about how pain is managed. This new thinking acknowledges the complexity and biopsychosocial nature of the pain experience and the need for multifaceted pain management approaches with both pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies. The magnitude and urgency of the twin problems of chronic pain and opioid addiction, combined with the changing landscape of pain management, prompted the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a workshop on December 4â€"5, 2018, in Washington, DC. The workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss the current status of nonpharmacological approaches to pain management, gaps, and future directions. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
