यह वास्तविकता है कि उर्दू शायरी सामाजिक सरोकार से कटकर छुईमुई की तरह किसी काँच के घर में परवान नहीं चढ़ी। इसमें शुरू से सामाजिक, पारम्परिक और राष्ट्रीय संवेदना पायी जाती है (यद्यपि राष्ट्र की व्याख्याएँ बदलती रहती हैं)। उर्दू ने अपने लिए कभी भी युग और वातावरण से हटकर अलग रास्ता नहीं खोजा । देखा जाये तो उर्दू भाषा दो परम्पराओं, दो संस्कृतियों और दो भाषाओं का संगम है। यही कारण है कि इसमें दो सभ्यताओं की मिलीजुली गंगा-जमुनी बहार हमें धनक के रंगों की तरह दिखाई देती है। जैसा कि हम जानते हैं कि यह संगम भारत की धरती पर हुआ, इसलिए उर्दू भाषा का बुनियादी ढाँचा तो भारतीय ही है पर कहीं-कहीं इसमें विदेशी स्थान, सभ्यता और संस्कृति के जो लक्षण दिखाई देते हैं, इन्हें हम एक औपचारिकता मात्र ही मान सकते हैं। यह बात भी ध्यान रखने योग्य है कि मध्यकालीन भारत में देशभक्ति का अभिप्राय आज के युग की परिभाषा से अलग था। उस समयकाल में सांस्कृतिक एकता का भाव समाज में नहीं था। कारण था इतिहास और सभ्यता से जुड़ी विशेष परिस्थितियाँ। देशभक्ति की सामूहिक सोच बहुत बाद की बात है। उस समय की देशभक्ति हमारी दूसरी सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक सोच की तरह निजी और व्यक्तिगत थी। इसकी बुनियाद सामूहिक एकता पर न होकर निजी और स्थानीय आधारों पर केन्द्रित होकर रह गयी थी, और इसकी अभिव्यक्ति भी स्थानीय और सीमित दायरों में कैद थी। उर्दू के उत्थान के इस आरम्भिक युग में प्राचीन और आधुनिक अवधारणाओं के बीच के फर्क को हमें ध्यान रखते हुए आगे बढ़ना होगा। -इसी पुस्तक से ܀܀܀ सन् सत्तावन का संग्राम भारतीय इतिहास की तरह उर्दू साहित्य में भी प्राचीन और आधुनिक के बीच एक सीमा तय करता है। इस संग्राम की असफलता से देश में पराजय की लहर में अंग्रेज़ों द्वारा किये गये जुल्म और बर्बरता ने भय के ऐसे वातावरण को पैदा किया जिसमें जी रहे एक आम आदमी ने अंग्रेज़ों से छुटकारा पाने को एक सपना समझकर सोचना ही छोड़ दिया था। इस संग्राम के बाद लगभग चौथाई शताब्दी तक भारत देश एक बेजान और आत्माहीन ज़िन्दगी बसर करता दिखाई पड़ता है। कुछ धार्मिक मार्गदर्शक और रूढ़िवादियों के अतिरिक्त अधिकतर ने सन् सत्तावन की विफलता को अन्तिम समझकर इस ऐतिहासिक और सामाजिक परिवर्तन से थक-हार कर समझौता करना शुरू कर दिया। ये परिवर्तन पीड़ादायक और अटल वास्तविकता थी और इसे रोक सकने का साहस किसी में नहीं था। इस परिवर्तन ने जहाँ एक तरफ़ समाज और साहित्य में पुरानी रीतियों का दमन कर दिया, वहीं नये विचारों के लिए मार्ग प्रशस्त कर दिया। लोगों के लिए सिवाय अपने को नये साँचे में ढालने के कोई विकल्प न बचा। जो लोग देश और समाज की पीड़ा समझते थे, उनके लिए भी आगे बढ़ने का मार्ग केवल यही था कि नयी सरकार से सुलह की जाये और अंग्रेज़ी शिक्षा और विज्ञान और मशीनी प्रगति और पश्चिमी मूल्यों को अपनाते हुए अपनी हालत को सुधारने के लिए अंग्रेज़ों से सहायता प्राप्त की जाये। यह परिस्थिति उन्नीसवीं शताब्दी के अन्त तक बनी रही। देशभक्ति की भावना जो आज हमारे सामने है, यह बाद की पैदावार है। -इसी पुस्तक से
