Lungo tutta la sua storia, dalle parole di fuoco pronunciate da Dio nella Bibbia attraverso i profeti, alle immagini medievali e rinascimentali di Cristo Giudice raffigurato con la spada nella bocca, il percorso della religione cattolica si arenò sul controllo delle coscienze e dei corpi, prima redigendo la famigerata legge che istituì i Santi Tribunali dell'Inquisizione, poi legiferando per la soppressione del libero pensiero attraverso l'Indice dei libri proibiti, ed infine utilizzando l'orribile metodo del processo e della tortura per soffocare ogni minima voce fuori dal coro. La libertà di pensiero, anche per coloro che non erano cristiani, non era tollerata; tutti erano soggetti alle leggi stabilite dalla Chiesa, così la paura divenne angoscia e si tramutò in terrore. La lettura dei numerosissimi verbali dell'Inquisizione fa emergere un senso di repulsione per ciò che la Chiesa confermò nell'abbrutimento e l'odio verso la vita, verso la giustizia, verso la ragione e il buon senso e nel disprezzo verso il corpo. Il raccapriccio è enorme e ci sbalordisce il genio criminale espresso da uomini che si ritenevano cristiani. Nella tortura, pratica delinquenziale, non era estraneo l'autocompiacimento e probabilmente il realismo dei corpi martoriati, squartati, mutilati, soddisfaceva il godimento degli inquisitori per il raggiunto potere. La soppressione, l'annullamento, l'umiliazione dell'altro/a sono stati anche la plateale dichiarazione della pulsione di morte che li animava (non è escluso che gli inquisitori stessi ne fossero coscienti; la misoginia, l'erotismo malato e l'odio sono solo una parte del problema, non dimenticando l'annullamento e la soppressione del sè).

La follia è il grande mistero con il quale Vittorino Andreoli si confronta ormai da decenni.
