The integument plays an important role in the survival of meta zoans by separating and protecting them from a hostile environ ment. Its function ranges from protection against injury and in fection; partlcipation in the regulation of body temperature and water balance, to respiratory activity, monitoring of the environ ment and production of signals related to behaviour. All these result from specific structural, biochemical and physiological properties of intra-and extracellular components of the integu ment. Thus its characterization can be best accomplished by a multidisciplinary approach with authors specialized in different fields of science. This multi-author book, in two volumes, provides an up-to date survey of the literature. The first volume deals with the integument of invertebrates, the second with that of vertebrates, both organized primarily on a phylum basis. As the level of knowledge on the integument of phyla differs considerably, the information provided is correspondingly either limited or con densed. For some of the smaller groups of invertebrates little information is available, as often only a few electron micrographs are to be found in the literature; on the other hand, from the large body of knowledge existing for vertebrates, particularly for mammals, no complete overview can be provided, but publica tions giving access to further information have been reviewed critically.

years ago extensive advances have been made in all parts of the subject. Full-sized textbooks have been devoted to it; notably The Principles of Insect Physiology by the present author, the three volume Physiology of the Insecta edited by Morris Rockstein, and Insect Biochemistry by Darcy Gilmour; and articles describing the most recent advances in the physiology and biochemistry of insects appear in the Annual Review of Entomology, in Advances in Insect Physiology and elsewhere. References in this edition have therefore been confined to such textbooks and reviews, to a few recent papers which have not yet become incorporated in this way, and to a limited number of other papers which provide useful starting-points for further reading. I The Integument The key to much of the physiology of insects is to be found in the nature of their cuticle. As was first shown by Haecke1, the cuticle is the product of a single layer of epidermal cells. It is often described as being composed of non-living material; but in fact the epidermal cells give off fine filaments contained within the so-called 'pore canals', which run through the substance of the cuticle and often come within less than a micron of the surface. Cuticle Structure As described from stained sections the cuticle consists of two primary layers, the endocuticle which makes up the greater part, and a thin refractile epicuticle on the surface, usually not more than one micron in thickness.

Structural Colors In The Realm Of Nature written by Shuichi Kinoshita and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Structural colorations originate from self-organized microstructures, which interact with light in a complex way to produce brilliant colors seen everywhere in nature. Research in this field is extremely new and has been rapidly growing in the last 10 years, because the elaborate structures created in nature can now be fabricated through various types of nanotechnologies. Indeed, a fundamental book covering this field from biological, physical, and engineering viewpoints has long been expected.Coloring in nature comes mostly from inherent colors of materials, though it sometimes has a purely physical origin such as diffraction or interference of light. The latter, called structural color or iridescence, has long been a problem of scientific interest. Recently, structural colors have attracted great interest because various photonic architectures, now developing in modern technologies, have been spontaneously created in the self-organization process and have been extensively used as one of the important visual functions. In this book, the fundamental optical properties underlying structural colors are explained, and these mysteries of nature are surveyed from the viewpoint of biological diversity and according to their sophisticated structures. The book proposes a general principle of structural colors based on the structural hierarchy and presents up-to-date applications.

This textbook contains important, comprehensive and in-depth account of all aspects of insect physiology, providing wherever necessary also the fundamental knowledge of the various systems. Although it is aimed as a resource material for postgraduate students of entomology, it would serve as an essential reference source for invertebrate physiologists and neurologists, entomologists, zoologists and insect biochemists. To achieve this goal, extensive references have been made to several textbooks and reviews, to a few research papers dealing with applied aspects of insect physiology and the resources available over the net. The first chapter deals with the anatomical and physiological attributes of the integument conferring insect success with a discussion on the use of the chemical properties of the cuticle to design novel molecules to control insect pests. The chapter also indicates that the structural design of the cuticle could itself be applied in the field of material science to develop hard structures which can withstand the harshness of the environment. Chapter two discusses the diversity in growth and life cycle patterns in insects. Chapters three and six deals with the digestive and excretory systems as potential targets for pest management. Aspects of the circulatory system of insects are presented along with an account on the new frontiers in insect immunity in chapter four. This would appraise the reader on the possible improved use of entomopathogens in biological control, in the discovery of antimicrobial molecules that can be exploited by humans, and of new strategies for management of insect vectors of human and animal disease. While the dynamism of the respiratory system (Chapter five) is presented as a key to their success, the use of the knowledge thus gained in fluid dynamics and biomechanical research is mentioned. An up to date account on the insect nervous system is presented in Chapter seven, together with a note on learning, memory and intelligence in insects. Chapter eight deals with the reproductive system of insects while chapter nine deals with hormones and regulation of metabolism, moulting and diapause. General protein, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and their energetic are presented in chapter ten along with the physiology of regulation in cold hardiness and flight. Chapter eleven deals with muscular coordination while an in depth account on the sensory physiology and behaviour is presented in chapter twelve.

An introduction to the intriguing world of insects, from bullet ants to butterflies. Designed as an introduction to the intriguing world of insect biology, this book examines familiar entomological topics in nontraditional ways. Author David B. Rivers gives important concepts relatable context through a pop culture lens, and he covers subjects that are not typical for entomology textbooks, including the impact of insects on the human condition, the sex lives of insects, why insects are phat but not fat, forensic entomology, and the threats that some insects pose to humanity. Each chapter presents clear and concise key concepts, chapter reviews, review questions following Bloom’s taxonomy of learning, web links to videos and other resources, and breakout boxes (called Fly Spots) that capture student interest with unique and entertaining facts related to entomology. Focusing on both traditional and cutting-edge aspects of insect biology and packed with extensive learning resources, Insects covers a wide range of topics suitable for life science majors, as well as non-science students, including: • the positive and negative influences of insects on everyday human life • insect abundance • insect classification (here presented in the context of social media) • insect feeding, communication, defense, and sex • how insects are responding to climate change • forensic entomology • how insects can be used as weapons of war • how insects relate to national security • why insects have wings • how to read pesticide labels
