The long story of Greek terrorism was meant to have ended in the summer of 2002 with the collapse of the country's premier terrorist organisation and one of Europe's longest-running gangs, the notorious 17 November group (17N). However, rather than demoralising and emasculating the country's armed struggle movement, the dismantling of 17N and the imprisonment of its members led to the emergence of new urban guerrilla groups and an upsurge in and intensification of revolutionary violence. Given the sheer longevity of the 17N terrorist experience, George Kassimeris sets out to analyse the life histories of the group's imprisoned members. Their stories, told through their own words, offer us a clearer picture than we have ever had of the political and ideological environment that provided the foundations upon which revolutionary terrorism took root in the mid-1970s. This book also brings up to date the gritty story of Greek terrorism, by analysing the country's post-17N generation of urban guerrilla groups, placing their extremism and violence in a broader political and cultural perspective.

The Greek government unsuccessfully battled leftist terrorist groups from 1975 to 2002, The two most notorious terrorist organizations during this period were the "November 17" group and another group called, "Revolutionary People's Struggle," In 1975, these organizations began a violent campaign against the United States, NATO personnel, Turkish diplomats, and member of the Greek political and business elite, The government's failure to curtail these groups resulted from the enormous belief that these terrorists were not a direct threat to Greek's democracy Fortunately, in June of 2002, with numerous arrests, Greek authorities made substantial progress and apprehended the leaders of the "November 17". This thesis examines the nature and the effects of terrorism by focusing on the ideology and activities of these two specific terrorist groups, This thesis also identifies and analyzes the origins of the organizations, reveals how the terrorist situation was created, and examines the causes that led to the inception of these terrorist organizations, Additionally, this thesis interprets the intelligence services in Greece before and after the demise of the Greek military dictatorship in 1974. It also explores how the intelligent community under the watchful eye of Greece's political leadership helped dislodge these terrorist organizations and helped protect and consolidate the fledging democracy.

Following World War II, a bitter civil war ravaged Greece for five years as Washington and Moscow vied for control of Europe's soft-underbelly. The Marshall Plan and NATO eventually thwarted Moscow's plans, but not before the country's social and political fabric was greviously torn asunder, permanently conflicting future generations of Greeks against one another. In 1967, the Greek military overthrew the monarchy with the support of the CIA, once again pitting brother against brother as the new Junta assembled voluminous secret dossiers on its opposition. When the Junta collapsed in 1976, November 17's terrorist agenda surfaced: remove American installations from Greece, those too of NATO, and withdrawal Greece from the European Union. Decades later the Greek government requested the CIA provide its secret Greek dossiers to Athens. Washington indicated the files had been destroyed. In 2002, Athens announced it had captured the masterminds behind November 17. Four were sentenced to life in prison. Two years later the alleged mastermind walked out of prison, disappeared, and is still at large today. Over twenty-five new terrorist attacks have occurred in Athens since that time. The following story begins today with the murder of a U.S. government employee near Washington and the disappearance of classified documents. The FBI investigates, leading it to November 17, and one of the most enduring Greek terrorist organizations in Europe.

Today more than ever, governments are determined to protect the public by rooting out terrorists and bringing them to justice, but in dealing with extremism, governments often violate citizens' individual civil liberties. In their zeal to attack terrorism and preserve domestic security, governments pass laws that violate basic freedoms and privacies and undermine the support of the public. To avoid hysteria and unwise policymaking, both citizens and officials need to rely on fact and sound judgment and remain skeptical of political propaganda. In this collection, scholars demonstrate that the realities of our post-9/11 world are not necessarily new. Many governments, from Putin's Russia and Fujimori's Peru to Italy in the 1970s have at times repressed the very liberty and democratic freedoms terrorists seek to destroy. Essays address the use of terrorist threat to sustain a credible anti-terrorist narrative, sway public opinion, and push through draconian legislation. For the most part, the contributors remain sympathetic to the efforts made by states to protect their citizenry; however, they encourage awareness and vigilance to prevent the wholesale exploitation of the fundamental rights of a democracy.

That Greece Might Still Be Free written by William St. Clair and has been published by Open Book Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with History categories.

When in 1821, the Greeks rose in violent revolution against the rule of the Ottoman Turks, waves of sympathy spread across Western Europe and the United States. More than a thousand volunteers set out to fight for the cause. The Philhellenes, whether they set out to recreate the Athens of Pericles, start a new crusade, or make money out of a war, all felt that Greece had unique claim on the sympathy of the world. As Byron wrote, 'I dreamed that Greece might Still be Free'; and he died at Missolonghi trying to translate that dream into reality. William St Clair's meticulously researched and highly readable account of their aspirations and experiences was hailed as definitive when it was first published. Long out of print, it remains the standard account of the Philhellenic movement and essential reading for any students of the Greek War of Independence, Byron, and European Romanticism. Its relevance to more modern ethnic and religious conflicts is becoming increasingly appreciated by scholars worldwide. This new and revised edition includes a new Introduction by Roderick Beaton, an updated Bibliography and many new illustrations.

The Barbarization Of Warfare written by George Kassimeris and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09 with History categories.

The images from Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad have been a grim reminder of warfare's undiminished capacity for brutality and indiscriminate excess. What happened in Abu Ghraib has happened before: the World War II, and more recent wars and insurgencies in Algeria, Congo, Angola, Vietnam, Bosnia, Kosovo, Chechnya, and many others, all bear witness to the ever-present human capacity to commit barbaric acts if circumstances allow. What drives people to mistreat, humiliate, and torment others? In an age when real time war, violence, and torture are becoming addictive forms of entertainment, it is now more critical than ever to deepen our understanding of the extraordinary distortions of the human psyche and spirit that occur in wartime. Eight distinguished scholars explore, in this first collective effort, the effects of the barbarization of warfare on our cultures and societies. Contributors: Joanna Bourke, Niall Ferguson, Jay Winter, Richard Overy, David Anderson, Hew Strachan, Paul Rogers, Kathleen Taylor, Marilyn Young, Paul Rogers, Anthony Dworkin, Amir Weiner, Mary Habeck, and David Simpson.
