Excerpt from Public Libraries and Literary Culture in Ancient Rome The idea of founding public libraries in the capital of the Roman Empire originated with Julius Caesar: the actual realization of this idea was effected by Augustus. In the era of peace, so auspiciously dawning but soon so ruthlessly disturbed, none of the dictator's plans for the development of Rome was more significant than that of instituting libraries for public patronage. Caesar had doubtless long since learned to appreciate the value of the public libraries already established in important literary centers in Asia Minor, Egypt, and Greece, and could therefore easily foresee the function they were destined to perform among the Romans themselves. A twofold motive on Caesar's part is set forth by Suetonius:' first, to reduce all existing codes of civil law to a more simplified form by extracting only the essential features and combining them in a select series of legal documents; and, secondly, to throw open to public use as many libraries' as possible, both Greek and Latin, the duty of organizing and managing them to devolve upon Marcus Terentius Yarro. Before so worthy an undertaking could be executed, however, political conditions suddenly changed. Caesar was assassinated, and Varro, likewise thwarted by his enemies, suffered at the hands of the proscriptionists - events which augured ill for the furtherance of literary interests at Rome. But, fortunately, the affairs of the new Empire were to be administered by a successor whose ambition lay in the direction of literary as well as political supremacy. Excerpt from Public Libraries and Literary Culture in Ancient Rome As no treatise dealing with public libraries in antiquity has survived from ancient or mediaeval times, it is only by the study of miscellaneous data afforded by classical literature, inscriptions, and monuments that a conception of public libraries in ancient Rome may be obtained. Employing such sources of information, the present inquiry will concern itself with the history, equipment, contents, manage ment, object, and cultural significance of the Roman public library. Particular attention will be directed to libraries in Rome during the first one hundred and fifty years of the Empire. The first four centuries, however, form the total period under general consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In The Idea of the Library in the Ancient World Yun Lee Too argues that the ancient library was much more than its incarnation at Alexandria, which has been the focus for students of the subject up till now. In fact, the library is a complex institution with many different forms. It can be a building with books, but it can also be individual people, or the individual books themselves. In antiquity, the library's functions are numerous: as an instrument of power, of memory, of which it has various modes; as an articulation of a political ideal, an art gallery, a place for sociality. Too indirectly raises important conceptual questions about the contemporary library, bringing to these the insights that a study of antiquity can offer.

They gave us democracy, philosophy, poetry, rational science, the joke. They built the Parthenon and the Library of Alexandria. They wrote the timeless myths of Odysseus and Oedipus, and the histories of Leonidas’s three hundred Spartans and Alexander the Great. But who were the ancient Greeks? And what was it that enabled them to achieve so much? Here, Edith Hall gives us a revelatory way of viewing this geographically scattered people, visiting different communities at various key moments during twenty centuries of ancient history. Identifying ten unique traits central to the widespread ancient Greeks, Hall unveils a civilization of incomparable richness and a people of astounding complexity – and explains how they made us who we are today. ‘A thoroughly readable and illuminating account of this fascinating people... Art And Identity In The Roman World written by Eve D'Ambra and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Architecture and society categories.

In this reappraisal of the art and architecture of ancient Rome, Eve D'Ambra focuses on the personal, social and cultural identity of its subjects. The acquisition of art, whether the purchase of copies of Greek statuary, the construction of a sumptuous villa or the commissioning of a portrait head, played a crucial role in Roman society in which displays of wealth and culture were necessary to gain and maintain power. The question of identity is key to understanding the nature of the Roman Empire, which seemed infinitely expandable at its peak, welcomed foreigners to become Romans, freed slaves to citizen status and allowed social mobility within a strictly hierarchical social order.
