*Includes pictures *Profiles some of the world's most infamous jails, from the Tower of London to Alcatraz *Includes a table of contents Alcatraz, the Maze, Rikers, Bangkwang, Sabaneta, ADX Florence-the names alone can chill the blood. Along with La Sante, Diyarbakir, Tadmor, and Carandiru, these are 10 of the toughest prisons in the world. Their walls have housed those guilty of some of the most heinous crimes in history-and frequently served as virtual torture chambers for those whose only crime is to fight for their political beliefs. Some have been the scene of massacres and other atrocities, while others house their inmates in conditions judged inhumane and degrading. Some are virtually run by murderous gangs of inmates, while others have played host to the most infamous names in criminal history. Some have closed their doors, while others operate to this day. But all 10 have one thing in common: they've all generated intense controversy. Packed with hard-hitting facts and pictures, this booklet forms the perfect partner to the accompanying documentary series, Hard Time, as it probes the innermost workings of these 10 infamous prisons from all corners of the globe. It concludes with a section exploring 'crime and punishment' much closer to home with a look at how the British penal system has changed down the centuries through profiles of four of London's most historic prisons: the Tower of London, Newgate, the Marshalsea and Holloway."

Incarceration has a long and inglorious history, from dungeons in the bowels of castles to oppressive penal colonies in Australia. Karen Farrington brings this history up to the 21st century, exploring some of the world's worst prisons, from Alcatraz to Pollsmoor, and the unending battles that rage between convicts and warders. Inside the prison walls, gangs rule, guards devise sadistic punishments, and newcomers suffer abuse at the hands of experienced tormentors. The World's Worst Prisons is packed with shocking accounts of prison breakouts, drug smuggling and life on death row. It also explores the politics of incarceration, including the harsh labour camps of North Korea and controversies surrounding private management of prisons. With prison populations rising each year, questions surrounding incarceration are all the more pertinent. Whether focusing on punishment, containment or rehabilitation, the prison system is imperfect and The World's Worst Prisons examines this dysfunction through some of the most dangerous jails on earth.

Lockdown written by Drauzio Varella and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-30 with True Crime categories.

The Carandiru House of Detention, in the teeming city of São Paulo, was the largest and most crowded prison in Latin America. Known as the 'Old House', it was also highly unusual in the way it was governed. Closed to the outside world, and even largely to the wardens, it was run almost entirely by the inmates themselves, who created a unique society complete with politics, hierarchies and a system of justice. In 1989, at the height of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil, with only a handful of physicians attempting to treat an inmate population of over 7,000, the medical situation at Carandiru was dire. A city doctor, Drauzio Varella, volunteered his time at Carandiru over the course of thirteen years, in an effort to combat the rampant disease. As he gained the inmates' trust he was given access to their society, where he was overwhelmed by the profound humanity and freedom of spirit shown by these men, despite their terrible crimes and the inhuman conditions in which they lived. Lockdown is Varella's powerful depiction of life on the inside, wherein he recounts the prisoners' colourful and surprising stories. The book ends with the massacre by the police of the prisoners that ultimately brought down the 'Old House'.

In July 1983 James Morgan Kane returned home in the evening to find a corpse in his living room. Fearing that he would be blamed and sensing that his wife was somehow involved, he wanted to do all to protect his young family. Jamie worked through the night to dispose of the body all the while disbelieving the situation he found himself in. His luck ran out days later as he was arrested and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Jamie entered the U.S. prison system and was to stay there for 34 years with stints in San Quentin, Folsom State Prison and the notorious Deuel Vocational Institution (DVI) in California. He would rub shoulders with some of the world's most infamous serial killers such as Charles Manson, Edmund Kemper, Charles Tex Watson and Herbie Mullin as well as gangs such as the Aryan Brotherhood and Mexican cartels. This book tells of his time: locked up with no hope of release, living the brutality of the unforgiving penitentiary system and finding his new purpose in life, as well as tales of his many run-ins with some of the world's most dangerous inmates.

“Gato’s head snapped back... We could make out the shots of several 9mms, a couple of 38s and one or two 45s. I hurled myself through the doorway and into the room. I didn’t look back.” Caught in an Ecuador hotel room with 8kg of cocaine, Pieter Tritton was no mule or dupe. He had planned and organised everything. The consequence: a 12-year sentence inside one of the world’s deadliest prison systems, where gun fights, executions and riots are a part of everyday life. As a Brit banged up abroad, Pieter had to learn how to survive – and fast – because one wrong move would mean death. This is the insider account of what it’s like to live in a place worse than hell and come out a changed man on the other side.

These are the stories about Australia's hardest inmates, from Australia's hardest inmates: the true and uncensored account of life inside Australia's toughest prisons.'Porky Pig' stalks the yard, snorting and grunting as he stares down the prison guard. "Whatcha looking at," yells Martin Bryant, Australia's worst serial killer. The guard stays silent. Says nothing. He simply takes one step towards the monster, now fat, bald and broken. Bryant - who killed 35 people and injured another 23 at Port Arthur in 1996 - is a 160 kg slob who trades Mars Bars for protection in Risdon Prison. The secret lives of Australia's most evil men will be revealed for the first time, with Inmates going on the record to talk about killers like Bryant, Ivan Milat, Neddy Smith, Carl Williams, Mark 'Chopper' Read, Michael Kanaan and Lindsay Robert Rose. Nineteen years after Australia's worst massacre, his blond hair is gone, and so is his self-righteous smirk . . . but he is as evil as ever. Bryant has attacked several jail workers and has showed no remorse for the crimes that shook the nation. He is just one of the killers you will meet in Australia's Toughest Prisons: Inmates. He then runs to the corner of the yard where he crouches, cowers, and calls for help like the coward he is.

The Big House written by Stephen D. Cox and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-03 with Social Science categories.

""The Big House" is America's idea of the prison - a huge, tough, ostentatiously oppressive pile of rock, bristling with rules and punishments, overwhelming in size and the intent to intimidate. Stephen Cox tells the story of the American prison - its politics, its sex, its violence, its inability to control itself - and its idealization in American popular culture. This book investigates both the popular images of prison and the realities behind them : problems of control and discipline, mainenance and reform, power and sexuality. It conveys an awareness of the limits of human and institutional power, and of the symbolic and iconic qualities the "Big House" has attained in America's understanding of itself"--Jacket.
