The Fortress Commentary on the Bible: The Old Testament and Apocrypha and Fortress Commentary on the Bible: The New Testament present a balanced synthesis of current scholarship on the Bible, enabling readers to interpret scripture for a complex and pluralistic world. Introductory articles in each volume discuss the dramatic challenges that have shaped contemporary interpretation of the Bible. Commentary articles set each book of the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha in its historical and cultural context, discuss the themes in each book that have proven most important for the Christian interpretive tradition, and introduce the most pressing questions facing the responsible use of the Bible today. The writers are renowned authorities in the historical interpretation of the Old and New Testaments, sensitive to theological and cultural issues arising in our encounter with the text, richly diverse in social locations and vantage points, representing a broad array of theological commitmentProtestants, Catholics, Jews, and others, and alive to the ethical consequences of interpretation today. A team of six scholar editors and seventy contributors provides clear and concise commentary on key sense units in each book of the Old Testament, Apocrypha, and New Testament. Each unit is explored through the lenses of three levels of commentary based on these critical questions. The result is a commentary that is comprehensive and useful for gaining insights on the texts for preaching, teaching, and research. In addition to the commentary essays on each book, the volumes also contain major essays that introduce each section of Scripture and explore critical questions as well as up-to-date and comprehensive bibliographies for each book and essay.

Speaking Of God In An Inhumane World Volume 1 written by Christopher Rowland and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-28 with Religion categories.
This two-volume collection of essays on the Bible and social justice, liberation theology, and radical Christianity by Christopher Rowland addresses the question raised by Gustavo Gutierrez about how we can speak of God as a loving parent in a world that continues to be so inhumane. These essays by an esteemed New Testament scholar represent intellectual interests of a lifetime as he integrated exegesis of the New Testament texts in their first-century contexts and located their interpretations within the quests for meaning and significance that exist within contemporary society. These essays represent mostly the latter concern--exploring Christian Scripture, which has informed the lives of men and women down the centuries--as they interpret both contexts, and in doing so make a significant contribution to contextual theology that should be heard by the inhabitants of both contexts. The first volume of Speaking of God in an Inhumane World includes essays on liberation theology and radical Christianity; the second volume focuses primarily on radical Christianity and includes reflections on Gerrard Winstanley, William Blake, William Stringfellow, and others.

As the center of the Christian world has migrated south, especially into Sub-Saharan Africa, a growing and dynamic African biblical scholarship has emerged. Prominent among the texts that have grabbed the interest of African biblical scholars is the gospel story of «the woman with the flow of blood» (Mark 5:25-34; Matthew 9:20-22; Luke 8:43-48). This book compares traditional North Atlantic scholarship on this gospel story with the new insights of African biblical studies in order to test the contention that these two versions of biblical scholarship are substantially different. In particular, this book argues that scholarships in the North Atlantic and African worlds differ in their conceptions of the goal of exegesis. For African scholars practical hermeneutical concerns are considered central to the exegetical task.

Insights From Reading The Bible With The Poor written by Crystal L. Hall and has been published by Fortress Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-01 with Religion categories.
Insights from Reading the Bible with the Poor provides a spirited introduction to methodologies and strategies for reading the Bible "from below"--from the back of what used to be church sanctuaries, from basements, from sidewalks. Drawing on the lineage of various methods of reading the Bible with the poor, the book invites poverty and biblical study into dialogue with real-world organizing to seek justice for those most often treated as "Other." The reading process occurs among the intersections of the "hermeneutical triangle" of Reality, the Bible, and Community. This book is for anyone curious about how to use the Bible as a resource for liberation. It is for faith leaders and community organizers, as much as it is for biblical scholars, because it draws on experiences at the intersections of academia, the Church and communities of organized struggle. It is written with an eye toward praxis, as the author shares from her own experience with the hope that space will be created for others to reflect on their own contexts.
