For more than a thousand years, the Śūraṅgama Sūtra has been held in high regard in the Mahāyāna Buddhist countries of East and Southeast Asia and has been as popular as the Lotus, Heart, and Diamond Sūtras. Its wealth of theoretical and practical instruction in living a spiritual life often made it the first major text studied by newly ordained monks, particularly in the Chan tradition. This Sutra is regarded as a complete and practical manual for spiritual practice that will lead to enlightenment. It provides instruction on understanding one’s own Buddha-nature, the potential within every being for becoming a Buddha. The Sutra explains how and why this nature is hidden and how we can uncover it and recognize it as our own true mind. The Sutra also explains why personal integrity and purity of conduct are prerequisites for spiritual awakening. It presents the principles of meditation, and provides guidelines for discerning correct practices from those which deviate into wrong ones. It explains how our own intentional acts, whether physical, verbal, or mental, result in karmic experiences, including rebirths into various levels of being, both human and non-human. At the heart of the Sūtra is the Śūraṅgama Mantra. The Sutra promises that the practice of reciting this mantra, in the context of the other practices taught in the Sutra, can successfully eliminate internal or external obstacles that block the path of spiritual progress

In December of 1984, Master Sheng Yen began a series of lectures on the Shurangama Sutra at the Chan Meditation Center in Queens, New York, as part of the Sunday Open House program. The Master provided deep, learned, and insightful commentary on key passages from the sutra, placing them in the context of ordinary life for practitioners of Mahayana Buddhism. Oftentimes, he would use anecdotes from his own life experience and contacts with people to elucidate points from the sutra, often drawing laughter from the audience. Not surprisingly, the lectures were very well received by members and visitors to the Chan Meditation Center. Beginning with this Volume One, the 39 lectures will be published in two volumes. Despite this being only a partial record of the Master's Shurangama Sutra lectures, an attentive and receptive reader will discover that, as teachings on Chan and Mahayana Buddhism, they are in every sense, complete and fully realized. They give us a profound sense of the context and meaning of the sutra, as well as a detailed view of how one should practice Mahayana Buddhism, and the importance of samadhi within that practice. For this we are deeply grateful to Master Sheng Yen for this offering of wisdom and compassion.

That Is Not Your Mind written by Robert Rosenbaum and has been published by Shambhala Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-09 with Religion categories.

Viewed through the lens of psychology and neuroscience, a classic Zen sutra becomes a springboard for exploring sensory experiences and realizing freedom. What does it mean to be liberated through one’s sensory life? In That Is Not Your Mind! Zen teacher Robert Rosenbaum explores this question by taking readers on a step-by-step journey through the Surangama Sutra. This Chinese Mahayana sutra is known for its emphasis on practicing with the senses (sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, and the Buddhist “sixth sense” of mind or cognition), as well as its teachings on the necessity of basic ethical commitments, like not killing or stealing, to support the development of one’s meditation practice and insight. Rosenbaum interweaves passages from the sutra with contemporary insights from neuroscience and psychology, illustrating the usefulness of the text with anecdotes from his life and his forty years of teaching experience. In addition to learning about a sutra that played an important role in the creation of Chinese Chan and Japanese Zen Buddhism, readers are guided through meditations and other practices derived from the sutra’s teachings, such as hearing meditations (awareness of sound, awareness of silence, turning hearing inwards) and centering meditations (basic centering as well as centering on compassion). "One of the most difficult aspects of Buddhist practice is wrapping our minds around how every moment is both a deceptive seeming and also a true gateway to awakening," writes Rosenbaum. "Nothing is hidden, but there is an infinite field we cannot see."

The Lotus Sutra is the coup de maître of the Buddha's enlightenment and achievement. Hailed as the King of all Sutras, the Lotus Sutra is the symbolism of Supreme Perfect Enlightenment for it focuses on the essence of the Buddha's teachings: complete liberation of suffering through attaining Buddhahood quickly. Hence, the Lotus Sutra is the veritable beacon of hope for people who wish to live with peace, happiness, and dignity. Mindfulness of Buddhahood in Life: Revolutionary Insights of the Lotus Sutra is a refreshingly original and innovative book of commentary of the Lotus Sutra. Written by a lay female Buddhist practitioner, this book is packed with unorthodox perspectives of the Lotus Sutra. Vastly different from the worldviews and interpretations of Master Chih-I and Nichiren, the book aims to help readers debunk the preconceived notions of the Lotus Sutra by unravelling the secrets of the Buddha's teachings through scriptural understanding of the metaphors, parables, and images as found in the Lotus Sutra. This is a must-read book for scholars as well as intermediate to advanced practitioners of Nichiren and Mahayana Buddhists alike who are keen to understand the Lotus Sutra from a theoretical and scriptural point of view. The refreshing insights-especially with respect to the compassion aspect of the Lotus Sutra- will certainly help you understand the pivotal roles played by Buddhas and bodhisattvas in supporting their disciples to attain Buddhahood quickly.
