'Wonderful ... among military historians, Roberts is Britain's crown gem' Wall Street Journal Taking us from the French Revolution to the Cold War and the Falklands, celebrated historian Andrew Roberts presents us with a bracingly honest and insightful look at nine major figures in modern history: Napoleon Bonaparte, Horatio Nelson, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, George C. Marshall, Charles de Gaulle, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Margaret Thatcher. Each of these leaders fundamentally shaped the outcome of the war their nation was embroiled in. How were they alike, and in what ways did they differ? Was their war leadership unique, or did these leaders have something in common, traits and techniques that transcend time and place and can be applied to the fundamental nature of conflict? Meticulously researched and compellingly written, Leadership in War presents readers with fresh, complex portraits of leaders who approached war with different tactics and different weapons, but with the common goal of success in the face of battle. Both inspiring and cautionary, these portraits offer important lessons on leadership in times of struggle. With his trademark verve and incisive observation, Roberts reveals the qualities that doom even the most promising leaders to failure, and the qualities that lead to victory.

Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler were two of history's greatest dictators. In this ground-breaking study, Desmond Seward finds striking parallels between their careers and their roles in shaping the destiny of modern Europe. He also shows how Carl von Clausewitz's classic treatise On War - a penetrating analysis of the Napoleonic campaigns read and re-read by Hitler- provides a crucial link between the two men. Napoleon and Hitler demonstrates in an entirely new way how history can repeat itself - and gives new and unexpected insights into these two terrible giants of modern times. "A careful study, clearly written, easy to read. He takes us through the careers of both men in turn, side by side, noting the similarities as he goes along. I am reminded of Plutarch's 'parallel lives' of the great Greeks and Romans... His interesting book deserves to be read both by those who would 'demonise' Hitler and those who are dazzled by Napoleon." Hugh Trevor-Roper - Sunday Telegraph 'Desmond Seward is right to draw attention to their similarities, and to their differences. We should study both: both are among the possibilities inherent in our civilisation.' Independent 'Solid historical biography with a compelling historical slant.' Booklist 'A clever and cohesive look at megalomania in action.' Kirkus Review

Napoleon bonaparte achieved so much, and lived such an incredible life, that it almost seems as if it was fiction. From obscurity he became emperor of france and virtual ruler of europe. After he was beaten and driven from france, he was left on a tiny island, back into obscurity. But that was not the end of napoleon. He bravely returned to france, and alone met an army sent to crush him. He reversed history and that army, and led it to victory winning paris back, and once again he was in power. Alone, european countries were no match for him, but allied together the ‘nation of shopkeepers’ et al, defeated him at waterloo. Dive into napoleon's realm and discover: • Exploration of napoleon's revolutionary tactics, strategic brilliance, and leadership that transformed combat. • His intriguing personality: uncover the multifaceted character driven by ambition, vision, and a never-ending quest for power. • The long-term impact of his reign: consider the significant impact napoleon's conquests and reforms had on europe, influencing the political environment we witness today. This book is designed for the modern reader—specifically, young individuals who are curious and have a strong desire for information. The story is designed to be straightforward, captivating, and educational, acknowledging the fact that modern readers are more perceptive and adept at absorbing information. The primary emphasis is consistently placed on military affairs, offering a lucid and succinct narrative of every battle, including specific dates and strategic particulars, but abstaining from exploring the intricacies of napoleon's political or personal life.

When the book was prepared, our example was Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" book. Like the timeless work of Sun Tzu, Napoleon's comments on the art of war were selected, edited and categorized. These comments are from the memories of the people who were with Napoleon until his last moments. These memories were studied and Napoleon's ideas on the art of war and leadership were selected. The conduct of the foreign relations of the Russian state in its several contexts—Kiev Rus, Muscovy, Russian Empire, Provisional Government, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and Russian Federation—were unique in its common currents from the beginning to the present. Geography was certainly a key factor, located in the center of the world's largest land mass and surrounded by often hostile forces. “All of the Russias” had to confront the problems of open frontiers and the conduct of relations with a number of adjacent states of different ethnicity, and with many that were more distant. No other nation states had to face such complex and divergent circumstances over their histories. Most other Great Powers were neighbors of similar states in culture and historical background, whereas Russia had to deal with Asian, as well as European countries. The Historical Dictionary of Russian and Soviet Foreign Policy covers the history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important individuals, events, and other aspects of the foreign policy of this important country. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Russian foreign policy.

While in exile on St Helena, Napoleon dictated a commentary on the wars of Julius Caesar, later published in 1836. In each chapter he summarized the events of one campaign, then added comments from the standpoint of his own military knowledge. Over the nearly two millennia between Caesar and Napoleon some aspects of warfare had changed, notably the introduction of firearms. But much remained the same: the rate of movement of armies (at the foot pace of horse or man); human muscle power as the main source of energy for construction work; some military techniques, notably bridge construction; as well as the actual territory fought over by Caesar and later by Napoleon. Napoleons commentary thus provides a fascinating and highly authoritative insight into Caesars wars, as well as providing a window into Napoleons own thinking and attitudes. Napoleon in places detects mistakes on the part of Caesar and his enemies, and says what they should have done differently. Remarkably, this is thought to be the first full English translation of Napoleon's work.Napoleon Bonaparte was born to an obscure Corsican family but rose through the ranks of the French army to become Emperor of France, conqueror of most of Europe and acknowledged military genius. He wrote this book while in exile on St Helena. The translator. RA Maguire, is a former civil engineer with a long-standing interest in military and ancient history.
