Fifteen sites of potential environmental concern, grouped into six waste management zones, were evaluated. A total of 22 monitor wells were installed and groundwater samples were obtained from each well. Soil samples were obtained for chemical analysis from 12 soil borings. Samples of surface water, bottom sediments and fish tissues were obtained from three ponds. All chemical analyses were accomplished in accordance with Standard USEPA analytical methods. Based on the sampling and analyses performed, levels of contamination were found in soils or groundwater at seven of the 15 sites evaluated which warrant further investigation and potential remedial actions. Recommendations were made as to appropriate follow-up site evaluation work at these seven sites.

The Department of the Air Force has prepared an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis and assessment of environmental impact to respond to contaminated ground water in Operable Unit (OU) B at McClellan AFB, California. Proposed action involves: (1) installation of extraction wells; (2) extraction of contaminated ground water; (3) treatment of extracted groundwater; and (4) release of the treated groundwater. Additional ground water monitoring, abandonment of a contaminated production well, continued extraction from a production well, and restriction on the use of a third production well are also proposed as integral parts of the restoration and water reclamation activity. This action only covers short-term measures to reduce the potential for increased health risks from the migration of higher concentrations of contaminants to on- and off-base water supply wells.

This letter report presents the analytical results and data evaluation for surface water and stream sediment sampling performed at McClellan AFB in January and February, 1989. Results are also provided from a geophysical investigation that was performed to locate possible underground storage tanks at five locations on McClellan AFB. All work was performed in accordance with the Draft Preliminary Pathways Assessment Work Plan, September 1988. Information obtained during this preliminary investigation, indicates that manufactured organic compounds and metals exist in some of the creeks and drainages at McClellan AFB. The data indicate that low-level contamination potentially originates from both on-base and off-base sources. Results from the geophysical investigation indicated a low probability of having underground storage tanks at three locations. Two of the five locations investigated were identified as having a high probability of having underground tanks. (jes).

Seven sites were investigated for contamination at McEntire ANGB during the Installation Restoration Program (IRP) Phase II Stage 1. Sites examined included two fire training areas, a sanitary landfill, a liquid waste storage area, an oil dump site, a C-141 spill trench, an unofficial dump site, and a drainage pond/swamp area. The Stage 1 field investigation involved the installation of 23 ground-water monitoring wells and the collection of numerous soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater samples. Samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOC), total organic halogens (TOX), total organic carbon (TOC), arsenic and trace metals, oil and grease, total phosphorous, and nitrates. Field measurements of pH, specific conductance, and temperature were also made. Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) sampling and analysis, both in the field and in the laboratory, were integral parts of this effort. Elevated levels for contaminants were identified at 5 of the sites investigated. Contaminants were elevated in groundwater at 4 of the 6 sites where groundwater was examined. Elevated contaminant levels in soil and sediment samples were found at 4 of the 6 sites where these media were sampled. Two sites were without contamination in the media investigated. Elevated contaminant levels were found but not confirmed at the base water supply well W-1. Keywords: Groundwater; Water wells; Hazardous wastes; Pollution. (KT).

This report describes a study of groundwater conditions at Installation Restoration Program (IRP) Site 4, Langley Air Force Base (AFB), Virginia. Site 4 is a former underground fuel storage area previously identified as a possible source of fuel contaminated soil and shallow groundwater in the immediate area. Two other possible sources of fuel were identified during the present study. One is the underground distribution system associated with the former fuel storage area. The other is an underground pipeline in current use. All three remain under consideration as possible sources of leaking fuel.

Envirodyne Engineers, Inc. (EEI) evaluated the potential for groundwater contamination at nine hazardous waste storage and disposal sites at Edwards Air Force Base, California. This evaluation consisted of an Initial Assessment Survey based on published and unpublished reports and records, interviews with base personnel, consultation with federal, state and local agencies, and site inspections. Five of the nine sites have little or no potential for groundwater contamination. Two of the remaining four sites, the Industrial Waste Pond and the Main Base Toxic Waste Disposal Site, may have a limited potential for contamination of groundwater. The remaining two sites, the North Lake Bed Storage and Disposal Site and the South Base Waste POL Storage Site, have significant potential to contaminate groundwater. At the North Lake Bed site, two subsites are in physical environments which are susceptible to groundwater contamination. Groundwater contamination at these subsites needs to be verified and the wastes removed. At the South Base Waste POL Storage Area, groundwater contamination may have already occurred or may occur in the future. Groundwater in the immediate vicinity of this site should be monitored to detect contamination before it migrates.
