Alan Clements is an author, activist, performing artist and one of the first Americans to become a Buddhist monk in the country of Burma (Myanmar), where he lived for years training in intensive mindfulness meditation and existential Buddhist psychology. Since leaving Burma, he has become a spiritual maverick, working for global human rights and sharing his contemporary understanding of liberation to audiences around the world. After decades of leading retreats, Instinct for Freedom is radical book of personal and planetary exploration, a visionary blend of adventurous autobiography, self-inquiry and independent thinking. Here Alan presents what he calls World Dharma, an approach to personal development that mirrors the narrative of his visionary life. He gives voice to an essential calling that is common to all people - a world dharma based in one precious human value: freedom, the liberation from fear, ignorance and dogma, and the elevation of dignity, conscience, and beauty. For Clements, freedom is rooted in real life experience, in holding life's complexities in balance with its wondrous gifts, and in the transformational power of relationships with other people and with the world. Exploring the nature of consciousness and our place in the mysterious cosmos may be the key to our freedom, he says. In detailing the early years of his Dharma life living in silence in a Burmese monastery, Clements presents a rare, beautiful, and nuanced account of the actual experience of intensive mindfulness meditation and what it can offer. Yet Clements's approach is not a doctrine. It is an intuitive process realized through deep inner trust, gentle self-inquiry and naturalness of spirit and expresses itself in daily acts of courage and love. No amount of spiritual practice or meditative training can adequately prepare us for life, he says. We must find our liberation through living in love, in this very moment, now, in whatever circumstances we face. Clements has been interviewed on ABC National, Talk to America, CBC, VOA, BBC, the New York Times, Time and Newsweek magazines, the Sydney Morning Herald, Utne Reader, Yoga Journal, and scores of other media worldwide. He also delivered a keynote at Amnesty International's 30th Year Anniversary at the John Ford Theater in LA. You can learn more about Alan's work on his website: www.AlanClements.com. "How to describe Alan's presentations? A tall order. Love poems/riffs/odes/chants to the goddesses of compassion, deeply inscribed with the blood of Burmese slaves, soldiers in Iraq, Palestinian children, freedom fighters anywhere. A momentary entry into an internal tête-à-tête, ad infinitum; a glimpse at all that inner discursive dialog which marks us unequivocally as members of the human race. Just in case we get too spiritual, let's not forget that we are required to, by nature, include everything. To paraphrase the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hahn's poem, "Please Call Me by My True Names," I am both the 12-year-old raped girl and the pirate who raped her. It is difficult to reconcile seeming opposites, and it takes the heart of a poet. Thich Nhat Hahn is a poet; Alan is one as well." - Marcia Jacobs, a psychotherapist specializing in victims of war, rape, and trauma; a senior U.N. representative for refugees in Bosnia and Croatia, 1993-1997; and a former officer of the International War Crimes Tribunal "Alan's life is material for a legend. An intellectual artist, freedom fighter, former Buddhist monk, he shares his insights and experience with a passion rarely seen and even more rarely lived. He'll make you think and feel in ways that challenge your entire way of being." - Catherine Ingram, In the Footsteps of Gandhi and Passionate Presence

After spending ten years in Burma studying as a Buddhist monk, author Alan Clements began travelling the world as a human rights activist. Instinct for Freedom is part memoir and part spiritual inquiry. He details his early years of living in silence in a Burmese monastery, offering a rare, beautiful, and nuanced account of the experience of intensive meditation and what it can offer. He goes on to illuminate a doctrine he calls World Dharma, the belief that no amount of spiritual practice or meditative training can adequately prepare one for life. One must find liberty through living firmly in the present no matter the circumstance. He gives voice to a politically engaged mysticism, based on the irreducible value of freedom. He teaches liberation from fear, ignorance, and dogma, and the elevation of dignity, conscience, and beauty.

William Morris And The Instinct For Freedom written by John Blewitt and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Socialism categories.

Much loved in his own era, William Morris has inspired prime ministers (Clement Attlee), artists, and eco-socialists (John Bellamy Foster). Ferociously opposed to capitalism and inequality, he sought to embrace humanity with passion, commitment, energy, and belief, working vigorously for a free, green, and non-hierarchical future. All this--with his distrust of conventional politicians and his belief that people can and must change the world--resonates in social movement politics today. This book offers a fresh perspective: a transhistorical approach presenting Morris's libertarian politics through exploring his intellectual and cultural heritage and considering practical-political issues, actions, and aims. Today we see how class intersects with gender, politics with technology and economics, ecology with industry and economics, and art with history. John Blewitt shows how these--and more--intersect with each other and with power, domination, resistance, emergence, and transcendence. Morris helps us grapple with these challenges, offering an ethics and a politics embracing socialism, communism, anarchism, and feminism.

This book is an introduction to and translation of the 1938 Walter Lippmann Colloquium held in Paris, which became known as the intellectual birthplace of “neo-liberalism.” Although the Lippmann Colloquium has been the subject of significant recent interest, this book makes this crucial primary source available to a wide, English-speaking audience for the first time. The Colloquium features important—often passionate—debates involving well-known intellectual figures such as Walter Lippmann, Louis Rougier, Friedrich Hayek, Ludwig von Mises, Michael Polanyi, Jacques Rueff, Alexander Rüstow and Wilhelm Röpke. Many of the topics addressed at the Colloquium, such as the proper methods of economic intervention, the relationship between the market economy and democracy, and the relationship between economic liberalism and political liberalism are issues that still vie for our attention in the aftermath of the Great Recession.

Has our "Fight or flight" response been compromised or overridden? In this book we explore "film it", the response of many to remain in situ and record situations unfolding before them. How has our "fight or flight" response been impacted by an instinctive response to record. We seek to understand how choice is determined and the impact on our self is affected through the screen. The book observes this phenomenon from the perspective of those present experiencing and acting upon there natural instinct; those present but a step further away viewing through a screen; and, importantly, those receiving that image from a posting. Do we experience a sense of freedom or imprisonment when presented with scenarios that challenge our perceptions? Chapters within the book explore how the different realities of situations we witness, whether present or not, can lead to flawed reasoning. Do we face an existential threat to our sense of self through our ever increasing reliance on the phone as the tool we turn to in any given situation. .
