He raises the question for us: "How did writers of antiquity use narrative to didactically persuade their reader/listener?" Examining Polybius and other writers of antiquity, David A. Miller considers how Luke uses narrative to instruct and convince his audience. Within this thesis, Miller examines how ancient rhetoric informs our understanding of didactic narrative. Through his examination of the categories of ethos, pathos, logos, form, invention, arrangement and style, he provides the reader with insights into Lukan didactic purpose and compares his work with other writers of history and biography. This provides a rounded, holistic approach towards understanding rhetoric and its application to ancient texts.
