En este libro se aborda el desarrollo histórico de los instrumentos electrónicos más relevantes y se da una explicación de cada uno de ellos, sin detallar minuciosamente su funcionamiento, puesto que muchos ya no operan en la actualidad. De igual modo, se brinda un análisis de cómo se fueron manufacturando y, en su caso, evolucionando, hasta transformarse en los instrumentos modernos de producción de música electrónica. Ya que el diseño de nuevos instrumentos musicales ha sido una tarea compleja, los dispositivos que se mencionan no son explicados con detalle técnico, sino que se mencionan los puntos más relevantes a manera de introducción. Por motivos de practicidad este libro se divide en tres secciones: aquellos inventados en el siglo XVIII, los que fueron desarrollados en el siglo XIX y finalmente los manufacturados en el siglo XX, muchos de los cuales operan hoy día. De este modo nos daremos cuenta de cómo la mayoría de los instrumentos electrónicos que se usan actualmente no tienen más de un siglo de haber sido manufacturados por primera vez.

'Este libro trata sobre los instrumentos básicos para medir las magnitudes eléctricas comunes: tensión, corriente, impedancia y frecuencia. Los instrumentos que miden magnitudes no eléctricas utilizan sensores que obtienen señales eléctricas a partir de magnitudes de otra índole (mecánica, térmica, magnética, química, radiación). Este libro enseña el funcionamiento de los instrumentos electrónicos básicos desde el punto de vista del usuario interesado en sacarles el máximo provecho, sin preocuparse por los detalles de su construcción interna. Los instrumentos se describen mediante esquemas de bloques funcionales (no bloques de circuitos) y circuitos equivalentes de entrada o salida. Se consideran los instrumentos de banco de laboratorio más que los instrumentos basados en un PC tarjetas insertadas en el PC o módulos conectados a éste mediante un bus estándar (USB, por ejemplo) porque la funcionalidad de estos últimos es muy limitada. Los datos que se ofrecen sobre instrumentos (especificaciones) sólo pretenden ser una guía, y no son el fruto de una búsqueda exhaustiva, que por lo demás pronto sería obsoleta. Se analizan con detalle la incertidumbre de la medida (con varios ejemplos de cálculo) y la reducción de interferencias que permitan garantizar la calidad de las mediciones, de acuerdo con las exigencias de las normas ISO 9000 y 14000. Para guiar al lector según su formación previa, objetivos de aprendizaje y grado de interés por los instrumentos, el Anexo I define seis posibles itinerarios de lectura. Los resultados óptimos se obtendrán si el estudio del libro va acompañado de prácticas de laboratorio. '
