This book provides new insights into the development of integrated approaches to peace and sustainability in the era of global change. Since the late 1980s, and in order to regulate the increasingly detrimental impacts of humans on the environment, the transition towards sustainability has been high on the agenda of researchers and policymakers alike. This book is the sequel to a well-received book titled ‘Integrated Approaches to Peace and Sustainability’ that aims to further advance the understanding of the dynamic interactions between various components of peace and sustainability. How are peace and sustainability linked to each other, and what are the key parameters that define the nexus between them? This book addresses those questions through a combination of theoretical studies and empirical research that contextualize peace and sustainability issues amid global transformations. The conceptual and empirical linkages between peace and sustainability are widely recognized in academic and policy circles. The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development confirms this recognition. However, many of the initiatives on peace and sustainability operate in silos, undermining the positive and mutually reinforcing relationship between them. Enhanced integration of peace and sustainability components is imperative for addressing complex challenges that come with global transformations that are manifested environmentally, socially, politically, and economically across levels. “Why haven’t we been successful in finding sustainable solutions?” is a question that this book attempts to address. This book questions the appropriateness of current approaches to international conflict mediation/peacebuilding and whether today’s practitioners have the necessary patience, passion, and training to manage twenty?first?century conflicts. This book also examines whether the current approaches to the mediation of international conflict and peacebuilding, as well as the education in these fields, effectively consider the influence of the post?Cold War environment and whether they address sub?national conflicts caused by the continually increasing social inequality within societies, among parties with different cultural, religious, racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. This publication provides an overview of methods available to describe, understand and measure interlinkages between the SDGs and options for their application. Further it highlights how systems thinking approach applied by ESCAP complimented tools by earlier scholars, as the most comprehensive method to develop strategies and plans for integrated and holistic implementation of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs. The short overview of the analytical framework developed by ESCAP describes how interlinkages were analysed using systems thinking approach of causal loop interactions combined with the theory of leverage points to identify effective and impactful interventions at the policy level. The framework was developed with SDG 6 at the core, since implementation of SDG6 naturally requires the use of systems thinking approach to enhance planning of water use or the anthropogenic water cycle to support and restore natural water cycle balance to ensure sustainable water availability for human, industrial and natural ecosystems. Examples of pilot applications in Sri Lanka, Tajikistan and Fiji are provided, as well as applications beyond SDG 6 and how the framework could be further used to support member states in Asia-Pacific to implement 203 Agenda on Sustainable Development and the SDGs.
