Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is a relatively new subject, with its roots back in the space sector of the early 1990s. Although many of the papers written around that time did not refer to it as IVHM, the fundamental principles of considering an integrated end-to-end system to monitor the overall health of the asset were clearly visible. As the subject of Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) and its associated technologies have grown up, businesses are making the transformation from selling a product to selling a service. This can be viewed as a positive disruption, as a relatively small technology breakthrough is being brought to market for a large business benefit. The sequence “sense—acquire—transfer—analyze—act “ feeds the information (processed data) on the asset’s health into the Operations or Management control center. Here, decisions can be made on maintenance actions with knowledge of the supply chain status, MRO loading, etc., provided by Maintenance and Logistics systems. Undoubtedly, a much more efficient and economical modus operandi. This book brings together a collection of twenty –two SAE International Technical papers on this very theme, organized according to specific areas of interest: • Engines • Airframes • Electrical Power Systems • Supporting Systems • Architecture They were selected by Dr. Ian K. Jennions, Director of IVHM Center at Cranfield University, in the UK. Dr. Jennions was also the editor of three other books on Integrated Vehicle Health Management, published by SAE International: • IVHM: Perspectives on an Emerging Field • IVHM: Business Case Theory and Practice • IVHM: The Technology

Integrated Vehicle Health Management: Implementation and Lessons Learned is the fourth title in the IVHM series published by SAE International. This new book introduces a variety of case studies, lessons learned, and insights on what it really means to develop, implement, or manage an integrated system of systems. Integrated Vehicle Health Management: Implementation and Lessons Learned brings to the reader a wide set of hands-on stories, made possible by the contribution of twenty-three authors, who agreed to share their experience and wisdom on how new technologies are developed and put to work. This effort was again coordinated by Dr. Ian K. Jennions, Director of the IVHM Centre at Cranfield University (UK), and editor of the previous books in the series. Integrated Vehicle Health Management: Implementation and Lessons Learned, with seventeen, fully illustrated chapters, covers diverse areas of expertise such as the impact of trust, human factors, and evidential integrity in system development. They are complemented by valuable insights on implementing APU health management, aircraft health trend monitoring, and the historical perspective of how rotorcraft HUMS (Health and Usage Monitoring Systems) opened doors for the adoption of this cutting-edge technology by the global commercial aviation industry.

Following the best seller, Integrated Vehicle Health Management: Perspectives on an Emerging Field, the new title Integrated Vehicle Health Management: The Business Case Theory and Practice takes the subject to the next level. This time it addresses the commercial justification for the adoption of a new modus operandi in asset health management, and its impact on business strategy and servitization of technology. Edited by Dr. Ian Jennions, Director of the IVHM Center at Cranfield University in the U.K., the book tackles the most important questions on the transformation of business from selling a product, and deriving future income from spare part sales, to selling a service in which income is received in return for effective maintenance of the asset. The resulting service business requires a much deeper understanding of how the product is used and should be maintained, thus providing the rationale for Integrated Vehicle Health Management- IVHM. Chapter highlights include: -How to calculate the return on investment of an IVHM system -How real options can be used for decision making -How the availability of prognostic information affects maintenance -The business potential of structural health monitoring in aeronautics Integrated Vehicle Health Management: The Business Case Theory and Practice includes interviews with manufacturers and suppliers on how they are marketing one-of-a-kind services, and opening up new and sustainable revenue streams. Case studies are also introduced to demonstrate the real value of condition-based maintenance, the advantage of cost avoidance and risk mitigation for high-value assets. The objective is to provide the tools and techniques for constructing a business case while also providing some of the context in which these variables are framed. Directed at industry professionals as well as researchers and students, Integrated Vehicle Health Management: The Business Case Theory and Practice fills an important gap in this emerging body of knowledge which unites the technical and the business aspects of a paradigm shift.

Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is the unified capability of a system of systems (SoS) to assess the current or future state of the member system health, and integrate it within a framework of available resources and operational demand. As systems complexities have increased, so have system support costs, driven by more frequent and often enigmatic subsystem failures. IVHM strategies can be used to mitigate these issues by taking a Systems of Systems view. Combined with advanced decision support methods, this approach can be used to more effectively predict, isolate, schedule, and repair failed subsystems, reducing platform support costs and minimizing platform down time. Integrated Vehicle Health Management- System of Systems Integration brings together ten seminal SAE technical papers addressing the challenges and solutions to maintaining highly complex vehicles. The strategy requires that the IVHM system must provide actionable decision support to operators and maintainers, informing platform operational capabilities and maintenance procedures. The goal is to prevent a given component from degrading to the point of failure or predictable impending failure. Specifications should also reflect a common means for communicating this information to other health- ready IVHM system components.

Structural Health Management (SHM) is a key part of the Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) approach, whose main aim is to develop an integrated end-to-end system to monitor the overall health of a vehicle. Structural Health Monitoring: Current State and Future Trends, edited by Professor Alessandro Pegoretti, a scholar from the University of Trento in Italy, introduces the reader to recent developments involved in health monitoring of aerospace structures. The chapters, represented by seminal SAE International technical papers, offer an overview of the most recent advances in the sensing techniques for SHM, analysis of SHM data and its applications in aerospace. SHM can allow a continuous in-service inspection of the vehicle, thus reducing the cost associated with manual inspection at predetermined time intervals. The availability of reliable information on the loading conditions and health state of structural components by the implementation of SHM can be beneficial for several reasons, such as: • To prevent catastrophic failure • To reduce the number and the cost of unnecessary inspections • To improve the design of structural parts, with a reduction of the weight and the costs of overdesigned components Structural Health Monitoring: Current State and Future Trends offers a unique perspective on this field.

Aerospace Predictive Maintenance written by Charles Edwin Dibsdale and has been published by SAE International this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-30 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Aerospace Predictive Maintenance: Fundamental Concepts, written by longtime practitioner Charles E. Dibsdale based in the UK, considers PdM a subset of Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), and must obey the same underlying rules and pre-requisites that apply to it. Yet, PdM is new because it takes advantage of emerging digital technology in sensing, acquiring data, communicating the data, and processing it. This capability can autonomously analyse the data and send alerts and advice to decision makers, potentially reducing through-life cost and improving safety. Aerospace Predictive Maintenance: Fundamental Concepts provides a history of maintenance, and how performance, safety and the environment make direct demands on maintenance to deliver more for less in multiple industries. It also covers Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) that aims to provide a platformcentric framework for PdM in the mobility domain. The book discusses PdM maturity, offering a context of the transformation of data through information and knowledge. Understanding some of the precepts of knowledge management provides a really useful and powerful perspective on PdM as an information system. On the other hand, Aerospace Predictive Maintenance: Fundamental Concepts also discusses disadvantages of PdM and shows how these may be addressed. One of the fundamental changes PdM implies is a shift from deterministic black-and-white thinking to more nuanced decision making informed by probabilities and uncertainty. Other concerns such as data management, privacy and ownership are tackled as well. Aerospace Predictive Maintenance: Fundamental Concepts covers additional technologies, such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) that will result in proliferation of cheap, wireless, ultra-low-power sensors, and will transform PdM into a more economical option. The book brings in the future possibilities of nano technology, which can be used for new sensors, micro-robotics for inspections and self-healing/repairing of systems which can be intergrated with PdM.
