This book explores diverse relationships at play in integrating Indigenous knowledges and Western Science in curricula. The readers will unravel ways in which history, policy, and relationships with local Indigenous communities play a role in developing and implementing ‘cross-cultural’ science curricula in schools. Incorporating stories from multiple individuals involved in curriculum development and implementation – university professors, a ministry consultant, a First Nations and Métis Education coordinator, and most importantly, classroom teachers – this book offers suggestions for education stakeholders at different levels. Focusing on the importance of understanding ‘relationships at play’, this book also shows the author’s journey in re/search, wherein she grapples with both Indigenous and Western research frameworks. Featuring a candid account of this journey from research preparation to writing, this book also offers insights on the relationships at play in doing re/search that respects Indigenous ways of coming to know.

Imagination is the source of creativity and invention. This volume of essays has been collected expressly to bring readers new ideas about imagination and creativity in education that will both stimulate discussion and debate, and also contribute practical ideas for how to infuse daily classrooms with imaginative activities. Researchers and educators around the world have taken up the discussion about the importance of imagination and creativity in education. This global relevance is represented here by writings from authors from Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Italy, Israel, Japan, and Romania. In the first part of the book, these authors explore and discuss theories of development, imagination, and creativity. In the second part, they extend these theories to broader social issues, including responsible citizenship, gender, and special needs education, and to new approaches to teaching curriculum subjects such as literacy, science, and mathematics, as well as to the educational environment of the museum. Since the first edition of this book, Imaginative Education (IE) has developed increasingly accessible strategies for teachers to routinely engage imagination in everyday practice. New essays for the second edition include discussions about increasing political consciousness, improving teacher education, and using mathematical evaluation in Part I, and phenomenological approaches to media education in Part II.

The focus of the book is on different ways of knowing: the western scientific way (reductionist, dualistic and materialist) versus the indigenous approach (holistic, non-dualistic, and spiritual). It discusses both science and medicine in the context of the challenges experienced in introducing science and medicine into Africa through imperialism, colonization, and globalization. It looks at selected indigenous African paradigms, the dominant western paradigms, and the practitioners that represent these practices. The book deals with questions concerning compatibility and incompatibility of different ways of knowing and delves into epistemological stances, and the assumptions underlying these epistemologies. The volume investigates whether, and how a person can accommodate different epistemologies, and the nature of such accommodations.

This handbook gathers in one volume the major research and scholarship related to multicultural science education that has developed since the field was named and established by Atwater in 1993. Culture is defined in this handbook as an integrated pattern of shared values, beliefs, languages, worldviews, behaviors, artifacts, knowledge, and social and political relationships of a group of people in a particular place or time that the people use to understand or make meaning of their world, each other, and other groups of people and to transmit these to succeeding generations. The inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in STEM education is a crucial step towards decolonizing knowledge and creating inclusive, relevant learning spaces that reflect culture. This book examines the theoretical, practical, and contextual aspects of incorporating IKS into Zimbabwe's STEM curriculum, with a focus on high school education. The book is a reflection of the realization that education systems in postcolonial societies like Zimbabwe must do more than simply propagate traditional Western paradigms. The lived experiences, past events, and educational institutions of their society must be reflected on and informed by them. The rich Indigenous knowledge in Zimbabwe has played a significant role in shaping communities' understanding of agriculture, health, engineering, mathematics, and the environment over time. Still, much of this knowledge has been marginalized in formal education. By providing a framework for the meaningful integration of IKS into STEM disciplines, this work seeks to close that gap. Indigenous Knowledge Systems are introduced in Chapter 1, detailing their origin, development, and philosophical basis. Chapter 2: An Examination of the current integration of IKS into STEM education in Zimbabwe, taking into account curricular approaches and classroom practice. Chapter 3 highlights the importance of evaluating and assessing integration efforts by proposing culturally sensitive and multidimensional approaches that are appropriate for Zimbabwean classrooms. In Chapter 4, we explore the challenges and obstacles to achieving successful IKS-STEM integration, such as teacher readiness, epistemological tensions, and systemic resistance. Chapter 5 offers an exceptional examination of how Indigenous knowledge artefacts and practices can be utilized for conceptual development in high school STEM instruction, with practical examples from Zimbabwean communities being included in the analysis. It is aimed at teachers, researchers and practitioners of decolonial education practices, as well as policymakers and teacher trainers, to develop locally relevant and globally relevant pedagogies. We aspire that this work will contribute to advancing scholarship that recognizes Indigenous knowledge as essential, living science and promotes African learners as both recipients and producers of valuable knowledge.
