Travel is an essential part of everyday life and today most journeys are multimodal. Most research and many publications on transport policy advocate sustainable transport, but the priority given to integration has been negligible. Urban highways are unique windows from which to grasp a city's identity. They can however be responsible for the fragmentation of cities and the degradation of their adjacent living environments. As many urban highways are aging, concerns about their redevelopment, upgrading or dismantling are emerging in many cities of the World. By examining the meaning as well as the opportunities offered by urban gateway corridors, the book attempts to offer a unique perspective on issues related this emerging landscape and transportation issue. More specifically, the book aims to describe the innovative approach to landscape infrastructure planning that was used for the YUL-MTL: Moving Landscapes initiative held in Montreal. Over two years, this initiative combined a design competition and a workshop with collaborative efforts between 20 public agencies to rethink a 17 km stretch of Montreal's Autoroute 20 gateway corridor. Linking the downtown area to Montreal-Trudeau international airport, the corridor is mainly composed of transport infrastructures and industrial wastelands in dire need of revitalization along with residential areas. The book presents the collaborative process behind the development of a strategic vision for the area, exposes the winning entries of the competition and describes the subsequent steps that resulted in an "atlas of possibilities" for the future of the area. It provides a broad overview of the main challenges facing any project leader who wishes to gather a wide range of stakeholders towards a common goal: building a shared consensus over the prospective development of large-scale infrastructure projects. It also provides the reader with a diversity of actions and solutions to improve the landscape of transportation corridors and their integration within their surrounding environment. Hence, as the book details the local context of Montreal's infrastructural landscapes, it also offers insights and ideas to improve urban highway integration for cities worldwide. Throughout the book, the permanent bond between cities and infrastructures is not only explored through the lens of landscape preservation but also landscape enhancement and development. This three-pronged approach offers a strategy based on the exploration of gateway corridor landscapes for what they are but also for what they could and should be. As the collaborative process allowed for clarifying the local stakeholders' standpoint, the design exercises (ideas competition and workshop) were used as tools to improve the outcomes on the latters. The contribution of the designers particularly helped materializing the strategic framework that resulted from the collaborative process through the addition of design guidelines. Overall, the book shows how the consideration of the landscape when it comes to development projects offers not only a rich contextual knowledge from a transversal and multidisciplinary perspective but also becomes a vector for the coherent planning of infrastructures and their integration within adjacent territories and within the city.

The challenge of growth in transport, especially in freight transport, and scarce resources in money, landscape and local opposition against new infrastructure investment require new solutions from transport policy. This book deals with these issues taking as an example the transport corridor Rotterdam-Genoa, one of the most heavily used in Europe. In 2010 the INTERREG project Code24 with partners from five European countries started with the aim to develop a transnational strategy to strengthen and to develop the corridor. The main objective was to accelerate and jointly develop the transport capacity of the entire corridor by ensuring optimal economic benefits and spatial integration while reducing negative impacts on the environment at local and regional level. These issues are highlighted in the book from an interdisciplinary perspective, taking into account spatial, economic, environmental and political aspects.

Abstract: The infrastructure is one of the key elements to construct and stabilize the sustainability of a nation or a city by providing a particular function and service to support the communities in a strictly fundamental way. The traditional structures and programs of infrastructure are always presented and constructed in a functional means lacking of relationship between natural and human system as well as cooperation with the social, ecological and aesthetic components while the engineering concerns has dominated the design and development of infrastructure. Additionally, those supporting programs are always required and occupied a huge amount of space. However, seems that the traditional approach for infrastructure could no longer fully cope with the new urban development, changing of public value and shifting of living pattern. The public and some of the professional has already formed a group and started the discussion of the lands where are lack of usage and development, especially the space under the bridge or space surround by the road system. In the contemporary world, especially in the situation of Hong Kong, the highway or road system requires and occupies a huge amount of space, which contains 665,640 vehicles on 2,090 kilometers of road fig.1that distributed by 442 on Hong Kong Island, 462 in Kowloon and 1,186 in New Territories together with 1,325 flyovers and bridges as well as 1,197 footbridges and subways. There are different site conditions and adjacent environments consisting of residential area, shipping port, recreational area and commercial area, etc. On one hand, the highway acts as a medium to connect people from place to place whilst at the same time providing efficiency and convenience to people by saving travelling time. However, it is also as a barrier in terms of separating the local communities due to the restricted area under and around the system. The result of disconnection of space has reduced the accessibility while minimized the opportunity of the integration for different groups of people. In addition to the existing typical road system in Hong Kong, it can be generally presented and constructed into four main parts, namely the above surface for sound proofing units and signage, on surface layer for traffic, below surface area for supporting structure and below ground space for foundation Fig.2. The usage of space is relatively mono-functional and limited in use while it is different from the multi-functional means of urban development, such as the complex residential and commercial area. As a matter of fact, the high density in Hong Kong needs a multifunctional and flexible approach to the built environment in order to provide a maximum usage of space. The multi-layering of programs of a site or architecture is the most common, productive and efficient approach for urban development while maximizing the usage of space. Bringing the economic and ecological value of landscape to the mono-functional transportation system might be an alternative to the new urban development in order to expand the possibility of land use and unrealized potential of space that integrated with ecosystem and contained with economical values. "Landscape Bionomics,” or “Bio-integrated Landscape Ecology,” radically transforms the main principles of traditional Landscape Ecology by recognizing the landscape as a living entity rather than merely the spatial distribution of species and communities on the territory, often analysed in separate themes (water, species, pollution, etc.). To be more exact, the landscape is identified as the "life organization integrating a set of plants, animals and human communities and its system of natural, semi-natural, and human cultural ecosystems in a certain spatial configuration." This new perspective inevitably leads to significant changes in how to assess and manage the environment. This book represents the culmination of an endeavor begun by the author, with the support of Richard Forman and Zev Naveh, more than a dozen years ago. It builds on the author’s previous successful publication, Landscape Ecology, A Widening Foundation, by addressing a range of additional topics and discussing the new theoretical and methodological concepts that have emerged during the past decade of research. Particular attention is paid to the fact that interventions in the landscape can be made with the best intentions yet cause serious damage!
