Para bien o para mal, las fronteras existen. Con ellas, emergen diversas formas de acomodarse a lo establecido, aunque también –nunca como ahora– múltiples opciones para transgredir sus límites, abriendo el pensamiento y la acción social a nuevos horizontes y destinos. Entre otros, aquellos que además de reivindicar un mayor protagonismo de la educación en la vida cotidiana, sugieren valores y prácticas que incidan en la construcción de una ciudadanía activa, plural, consciente, solidaria, inclusiva y sensible, comprometida con la reivindicación de un mundo mucho más congruente con el respeto a los derechos cívicos. Todo ello en el marco de una sociedad cuyos modos de afrontar las crisis de identidad que la afectan urge repensar con el objetivo de ampliar el espectro de oportunidades que emerge de la democracia, la justicia y la equidad. Desde diferentes perspectivas y realizaciones, el quehacer científico, académico y profesional de la pedagogía social se ha vinculado históricamente a tales tareas, mediante las que se han activado teorías y prácticas educativas sustentadas en una clara e inequívoca vocación socializadora, en la que “lo social” se nos presenta como contexto, texto y pretexto de una educación integral e integradora a la que distintos avatares insisten en nombrar como educación social. A los fundamentos científicos, históricos y praxiológicos de esta pedagogía-educación social se remite este libro, cuyos argumentos principales no obvian las tensiones y debates que han ido perfilando su estatuto epistemológico, pedagógico, axiológico e ideológico a lo largo del tiempo. Tampoco se inhiben ante las responsabilidades que ha ido contrayendo con el logro de un mejor futuro para la Humanidad, apostando por una educación de amplias miras que no se contradiga a sí misma: ni en sus propósitos crítico-reflexivos ni en sus prácticas emancipatorias.

Iris Zavala argues that Hispanic modernism is an emancipatory narrative of self-representation. Out of Cuba's struggles against Spanish and U.S. colonialism, modernism emerged among the Hispanic intelligentsia as an attempt to create a collective narrative rejecting colonial cultural patterns. Hispanic modernism crusaded for a cosmopolitanism opposed to colonialism. The work of José MartÃ, Rubén DarÃo, Valle-Inclán, Unamuno and Julián del Casal rejects a hegemonic idea of progress and the imposition of alien political and cultural practices. Through a poetics of negation, they generated a revolutionary social and artistic awakening that resulted in the unprecedented cultural achievments of Hispanic modernism.
