The 2014 Ukrainian crisis has highlighted the pro-Russia stances of some European countries, such as Hungary and Greece, and of some European parties, mostly on the far-right of the political spectrum. They see themselves as victims of the EU “technocracy” and liberal moral values, and look for new allies to denounce the current “mainstream” and its austerity measures. These groups found new and unexpected allies in Russia. As seen from the Kremlin, those who denounce Brussels and its submission to U.S. interests are potential allies of a newly re-assertive Russia that sees itself as the torchbearer of conservative values. Predating the Kremlin’s networks, the European connections of Alexander Dugin, the fascist geopolitician and proponent of neo-Eurasianism, paved the way for a new pan-European illiberal ideology based on an updated reinterpretation of fascism. Although Dugin and the European far-right belong to the same ideological world and can be seen as two sides of the same coin, the alliance between Putin’s regime and the European far-right is more a marriage of convenience than one of true love. This unique book examines the European far-right’s connections with Russia and untangles this puzzle by tracing the ideological origins and individual paths that have materialized in this permanent dialogue between Russia and Europe.

Alla fine degli anni Trenta, con la conquista dell'Etiopia e la proclamazione dell'Impero, l'Italia fascista sente il bisogno di affiancare alla nuova coscienza imperiale degli italiani anche una coscienza razziale. Ben presto dal razzismo africano si passerà all'antisemitismo, e nel 1938 in pochi mesi si arriverà alle fatidiche leggi razziali che equivalsero alla morte civile per gli ebrei, banditi da scuole, luoghi di lavoro, esercito, ed espropriati delle loro attività. Tutti gli italiani ariani aderirono, dai piccoli balilla che non salutavano più i compagni, a gente comune e alti accademici che volsero le spalle agli ex amici. La bella gioventù dell'epoca (universitari, giornalisti e professionisti in erba) rappresentò l'avanguardia del razzismo fascista. Molti di loro avrebbero costituito l'ossatura della classe dirigente della Repubblica, ma quasi tutti in quel quinquennio furono contagiati dal virus antisemita. Ecco perché per circa sessant'anni c'è stata una sorta di autoassoluzione nazionale che gli storici non hanno pienamente rivisto. Per restituirci un'immagine più veritiera dell'atteggiamento della popolazione di fronte alla persecuzione dei connazionali ebrei, Avagliano e Palmieri hanno scandagliato un'enorme mole di fonti.

Questo libro, che inizialmente avrebbe dovuto chiamarsi "Il sentiero del cinabro" e che poi l’autore mutò in bozza, venne completato entro la metà del 1962 e pubblicato dall’editore Vanni Scheiwiller nel marzo 1963, con lo scopo di rispondere alle polemiche suscitate dall’intellighenzia italiana all’uscita di Cavalcare la tigre nel novembre 1961, in quanto si riteneva intollerabile che fosse stato pubblicato un saggio di un autore ancora messo all’indice. Julius Evola lo aveva scritto per farlo pubblicare dopo la sua morte, ma prevalse la richiesta del giovane editore milanese. Non si tratta di un’opera autobiografica, precisa il filosofo, ma di una “guida attraverso i miei libri”, anche se trattando, più che di vicende e fatti personali, di idee e di quei valori tradizionali che hanno caratterizzato tutta la sua vita, ben gli si adatta la definizione di “autobiografia spirituale”. In quanto tale Il cammino del cinabro ha una importanza fondamentale ed è determinante non soltanto per ben comprendere il percorso delle tesi e della “visione del mondo” che mossero Julius Evola, ma soprattutto per constatare come ci sia un filo conduttore e una coerenza di fondo che legano tutte le sue opere e le posizioni che in esse vengono trasmesse.

Lo storico ha il compito di trasmettere la memoria, il dovere di ricordare. Quando, invece, è necessario dimenticare? Quando l'oblio diventa una virtù essenziale a ricomporre una comunità? Nell'Atene del V secolo, dopo il regime dei Trenta Tiranni, venne imposto il Patto dell'oblio, che vietava di "rivangare il passato" anche a quei cittadini che avrebbero avuto tutti i titoli per vendicarsi, "anteponendo alle rivalse private la salvezza della città". Da allora sono state innumerevoli le volte in cui la storia ci ha imposto di dimenticare, di concederci una sospensione della memoria per rimettere le cose in ordine, sia pure in un ordine provvisorio. Oggi, dopo la fine del Novecento - il secolo delle febbri ideologiche e delle grandi passioni politiche -, fare i conti con la nostra memoria condivisa è diventato più che mai necessario. Perché la scomparsa di fascismo e comunismo non ha significato la fine dell'uso politico del passato: "Nuove dottrine e nuovi radicalismi sono entrati in campo e si sono mescolati con quel che rimaneva delle vecchie fedi; tutte insieme poi hanno viziato l'aria, rendendo impossibile agli analisti e ai raccontatori del passato di prendere il fiato necessario per un'impresa che potesse dirsi di grande respiro". Queste pagine attraversano oltre due millenni di storia, di storie e di uomini, ma anche di interpretazioni, errori di valutazione e menzogne. Dalla Firenze di Savonarola alla Roma fascista, dall'inquisizione allo schiavismo, da Giuda a Napoleone, l'autore intraprende un viaggio coraggioso e appassionato nella memoria intermittente, con la convinzione che, se saremo capaci di fare i conti con la storia senza preconcetti o pregiudizi, ci imbatteremo in non poche sorprese e forse saremo in grado di "ritrovare una base comune da cui avventurarci nella ricerca sul passato".
