The increasing role and power of artificial intelligence in our lives and world requires us to imagine and shape a desirable future with this technology. Since visions of AI often draw from Christian apocalyptic narratives, current discussions about technological hopes and fears present an opportunity for a deeper engagement with Christian eschatological resources. This book argues that the Christian apocalyptic imagination can transform how we think about and use AI, helping us discover ways artificial agency may participate in new creation.

The Fourth Civilization: Technology, Society, and Ethics stimulates its readers to consider the ethical and societal consequences of technologies they already use, and others that will become ubiquitous. Its discussions and provocative questions integrate history, science, technology, and ethical and religious beliefs, examining the past and present, and preparing for the future. Social changes always follow the adoption of new technologies. The plow drove the transition from hunter-gatherer to agrarian society, and the steam engine began the Industrial Revolution. Computing technology now ushers in an Information Age. What does ethical decision-making look like in a time of rapid transition and beyond? What will society be like once things stabilize in a Fourth Civilization, if indeed they will? How will robots, artificial intelligence, factory automation, and self-driving vehicles affect daily life and work? Discussions about ideas were not common in an era of specialist technicians. They are becoming necessary and routine in a fast-changing and more broadly integrative world, and this book attempts to practice what it preaches. Let it inform, provoke, and become a part of New Renaissance literature, inspiring its readers to become ethically informed New Renaissance people in the Fourth Civilization information age.

Policing Toward An Unknown Future written by John Crank and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-16 with Social Science categories.
The enclosed papers are the culmination of a project Dr. John Crank and Dr. Colleen Kadleck carried out assessing issues facing the police into the early 21st century. The papers are future oriented, in the sense that they anticipate trends visible today. Everywhere, the contributing scholars found that the organizational concept, practice, and function of the police were undergoing transition. Yet, the seeming state-level hardening of the police function was ubiquitous. Two themes were noteworthy. On the one hand, in developing or ‘second world’ countries, police face endemic problems of corruption, organized crime, and drugs. Police, in response, are undergoing centralization and intensification of law enforcement activities. In countries with first world economies – Canada, the United States, and Australia – contributors discovered trends toward expansion of the police function, a trend described by Brodeur as toward 'high policing'. It reflects the growing reliance on surveillance for crime control and for the tracking of minority, indigenous, and immigrant populations in crime prevention efforts. The results suggest that governments, sometimes encouraged by their citizenry, seem increasingly to rely on the police to deal with a broad array of social as well as criminal problems. This book was originally published as a special issue of Police Practice and Research.

Spying in the United States began during the Revolutionary War, with George Washington as the first director of American intelligence and Benedict Arnold as the first turncoat. The history of American espionage is full of intrigue, failures and triumphs--and motives honorable and corrupt. Several notorious spies became household names--Aldrich Ames, Robert Hanssen, the Walkers, the Rosenbergs--and were the subjects of major motion pictures and television series. Many others have received less attention. This book summarizes hundreds of cases of espionage for and against U.S. interests and offers suggestions for further reading. Milestones in the history of American counterintelligence are noted. Charts describe the motivations of traitors, American targets of foreign intelligence services and American traitors and their foreign handlers. A former member of the U.S. intelligence community, the author discusses trends in intelligence gathering and what the future may hold. An annotated bibliography is provided, written by Hayden Peake, curator of the Historical Intelligence Collection of the Central Intelligence Agency.
