This text presents the proceedings of a conference on intelligent autonomous systems. Papers contribute solutions to the task of designing autonomous systems that are capable of operating independently of a human in partially structured and unstructured environments. For specific application, these systems should also learn from their actions in order to improve and optimize planning and execution of new tasks.

After a long period, in which the research focused mainly on industrial robotics, nowadays scientists aim to build machines able to act autonomously in unstructured domains, and to interface friendly with humans, while performing intelligently their assigned tasks. Such intelligent autonomous systems are now being intensively developed, and are ready to be applied to every field, from social life to modern enterprises. We believe the following years will be increasingly characterised by their extensive use. This is dramatically changing the whole scenario of human society.

The field of Intelligent Autonomous Systems (lAS) has attracted over the years the attention of numerous research and industrial groups and has by now arrived at an advanced level of development. The results have been achieved through the synergetic use of concepts, techniques and technologies drawn from electrical and mechanical engineering, control engineering, systems science, computer science and management science. Currently, the majority of working systems in practice are of the semi autonomous type needing some level of human intervention. Therefore much effort is presently devoted in academic, research and industrial environments towards further increasing the level of autonomy. This book provides a collection of essays which cover the latest research in the lAS field and present a rich set of results accompanied by detailed descriptions of the relevant concepts, tools, techniques and hardware/software designs. The book contains twenty three chapters grouped in the following parts: Part 1: General concepts, architectures and technologies Part 2: Mobile, walking and snake-like robots Part 3: Applications PART 1 involves the first seven chapters which deal with generic issues. Chapter 1 (by S. G. Tzafestas) provides some background material, accompanied by a description of two research lAS prototypes, namely a car-disassembly robotic system and a semi-autonomous/autonomous robotic wheelchair. Chapter 2 (by G. Bolmsjo, M. Olsson and K. Brink) presents a generic event-based control system structure for the control of a robotic workcell, including its implementation, where the autonomous operation is achieved via reactive replanning and configurable corrections.

Intelligent autonomous systems are increasingly being applied in various fields, ranging from industrial applications to professional services and household domains. These advancements in technology and application domains have brought forth the need for continuous research and development to address new challenges in deploying intelligent autonomous systems in a reliable and user-independent manner. This book is a compilation that aims to serve researchers and practitioners in related fields by providing a timely dissemination of recent progress in the areas of autonomous mobility and robotics. The contents of this book are based on a collection of papers presented at the 18th International Conference on Intelligent Autonomous Systems (IAS18 2023), held at the Suwon Convention Center in Suwon, Korea. The conference took place fully in person from July 4 to 7, 2023, with the theme “Impact and Effect of AI on Intelligent Autonomous Systems.” It encompassed discussions on theories, applications, and creative innovations in intelligent autonomous systems, covering topics such as autonomous vehicles, intelligent agents, smart sensors and actuators, smart haptics, human–machine interaction, digital twin, digital health, and metaverse, VR, AR, or MR. For ease of reading, the 91 papers have been grouped into five chapters: Chapter 1: Intelligent Autonomous Vehicles; Chapter 2: Autonomous Robots; Chapter 3: Intelligent Perception and Sensors; Chapter 4: Data Fusion and Machine Learning for Intelligent Robots; and Chapter 5: Applied Autonomous Systems. The articles included in this book underwent a rigorous peer-review process and were presented at the IAS18-2023 conference. For researchers working in the field of intelligent autonomous systems technology, we believe this book provides valuable insights into recent advances in autonomous technologies and applications, thereby enriching their studies. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the authors and editors who contributed to this edition.

Understanding Intelligence written by Rolf Pfeifer and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-07-27 with Computers categories.

The book includes all the background material required to understand the principles underlying intelligence, as well as enough detailed information on intelligent robotics and simulated agents so readers can begin experiments and projects on their own. By the mid-1980s researchers from artificial intelligence, computer science, brain and cognitive science, and psychology realized that the idea of computers as intelligent machines was inappropriate. The brain does not run "programs"; it does something entirely different. But what? Evolutionary theory says that the brain has evolved not to do mathematical proofs but to control our behavior, to ensure our survival. Researchers now agree that intelligence always manifests itself in behavior—thus it is behavior that we must understand. An exciting new field has grown around the study of behavior-based intelligence, also known as embodied cognitive science, "new AI," and "behavior-based AI." This book provides a systematic introduction to this new way of thinking. After discussing concepts and approaches such as subsumption architecture, Braitenberg vehicles, evolutionary robotics, artificial life, self-organization, and learning, the authors derive a set of principles and a coherent framework for the study of naturally and artificially intelligent systems, or autonomous agents. This framework is based on a synthetic methodology whose goal is understanding by designing and building. The book includes all the background material required to understand the principles underlying intelligence, as well as enough detailed information on intelligent robotics and simulated agents so readers can begin experiments and projects on their own. The reader is guided through a series of case studies that illustrate the design principles of embodied cognitive science.
