The Lockwood Analytical Method for Prediction (LAMP) is a systematic technique for predicting short-term, unique behaviors. Using primarily qualitative empirical data, LAMP allows the analyst to predict the most likely outcomes for specific research questions across a wide range of intelligence problems, such as cyber threats in the U.S., the possibility of an Al Qaeda attack, the likelihood of Iran providing nuclear capability to terrorist groups, or the future actions of the Mexican drug cartel. LAMP offers an innovative and powerful method for organizing all available information based on the perceptions of the national actors, using it to make relevant predictions as to which alternate future is most likely to occur at a given moment in time. Its transparent structure enables anyone to see how an analyst gets from point A to point B to produce an intelligence estimate. LAMP differs from other analytical techniques in that it is based on determining the relative probability of a range of alternate futures, rather than attempting to determine the quantitative probability of their occurrence. After explaining its theoretical framework, the text leads the reader through the process of predictive analysis before providing practical case studies showing how LAMP is applied against real world problems, such as the possible responses of Israel, the U.S., and Lebanon to the behavior of Hezbollah or the competing visions of the future of Afghanistan. Evaluation of the method is provided with the case studies to show the effectiveness of the LAMP predictions over time. The book is complemented by a website with downloadable software for use by students of intelligence in conducting their own predictive analysis. It will be an essential tool for the analyst and the student, not only for national security issues but also for competitive intelligence.

In recent years, a considerable amount of effort has been devoted to cyber-threat protection of computer systems which is one of the most critical cybersecurity tasks for single users and businesses since even a single attack can result in compromised data and sufficient losses. Massive losses and frequent attacks dictate the need for accurate and timely detection methods. Current static and dynamic methods do not provide efficient detection, especially when dealing with zero-day attacks. For this reason, big data analytics and machine intelligencebased techniques can be used. This book brings together researchers in the field of big data analytics and intelligent systems for cyber threat intelligence CTI and key data to advance the mission of anticipating, prohibiting, preventing, preparing, and responding to internal security. The wide variety of topics it presents offers readers multiple perspectives on various disciplines related to big data analytics and intelligent systems for cyber threat intelligence applications. Technical topics discussed in the book include: • Big data analytics for cyber threat intelligence and detection • Artificial intelligence analytics techniques • Real-time situational awareness • Machine learning techniques for CTI • Deep learning techniques for CTI • Malware detection and prevention techniques • Intrusion and cybersecurity threat detection and analysis • Blockchain and machine learning techniques for CTI

The past two years have seen signi?cant interest and progress made in national and homeland security research in the areas of information technologies, orga- zational studies, and security-related public policy. Like medical and biological research, which is facing signi?cant information overload and yet also trem- dous opportunities for new innovation, the communities of law enforcement, criminal analysis, and intelligence are facing the same challenge. As medical - formatics and bioinformatics have become major ?elds of study, the science of "intelligence and security informatics" is now emerging and attracting interest from academic researchers in related ?elds as well as practitioners from both government agencies and industry. Broadly de?ned, intelligence and security informatics is the study of the - velopmentanduseofadvancedinformationtechnologiesandsystemsfornational and homeland security related applications, through an integrated technological, organizational, and policy based approach. The First Symposium on Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI2003) was held in June 2003 in Tucson, Arizona. It provided a stimulating intellectual forum of discussions among previously d- paratecommunities:academicresearchersininformationtechnologies, computer science, public policy, and social studies; local, state, and federal law enfor- ment and intelligence experts; and information technology industry consultants and practitioners. Building on the momentum of ISI2003, we held the Second Symposium on IntelligenceandSecurityInformatics(ISI2004)inJune2004inTucson,Arizona.
