The management and control of networks can no longer be envisaged without the introduction of artificial intelligence at all stages. Intelligent Network Management and Control deals with topical issues related mainly to intelligent security of computer networks, deployment of security services in SDN (software-defined networking), optimization of networks using artificial intelligence techniques and multi-criteria optimization methods for selecting networks in a heterogeneous environment. This book also focuses on selecting cloud computing services, intelligent unloading of calculations in the context of mobile cloud computing, intelligent resource management in a smart grid-cloud system for better energy efficiency, new architectures for the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), the application of artificial intelligence in cognitive radio networks and intelligent radio input to meet the on-road communication needs of autonomous vehicles.

Three speakers at the Second Workshop on Network Management and Control nostalgically remembered the INTEROP Conference at which SNMP was able to interface even to CD players and toasters. We agreed this was indeed a major step forward in standards, but wondered if anyone noticed whether the toast was burned, let alone, would want to eat it. The assurance of the correct operation of practical systems under difficult environments emerged as the dominant theme of the workshop with growth, interoperability, performance, and scalability as the primary sub-themes. Perhaps this thrust is un surprising, since about half the 100 or so attendees were from industry, with a strong contingency of users. Indeed the technical program co-chairs, Shivendra Panwar of Polytechnic and Walter Johnston of NYNEX, took as their assignment the coverage of real problems and opportunities in industry. Nevertheless we take it as a real indication of progress in the field that the community is beginning to take for granted the availability of standards and even the ability to detect physical, link, and network-level faults and is now expecting diagnostics at higher levels as well as system-wide solutions.

International Conference Intelligent Network and Intelligence in Networks (2IN97) French Ministry of Telecommunication, 20 Avenue de Segur, Paris -France September 2-5, 1997 Organizer: IFIP WG 6.7 -Intelligent Networks Sponsorship: IEEE, Alcatel, Ericsson, France Telecom, Nokia, Nordic Teleoperators, Siemens, Telecom Finland, Lab. PRiSM Aim of the conference To identify and study current issues related to the development of intelligent capabilities in networks. These issues include the development and distribution of services in broadband and mobile networks. This conference belongs to a series of IFIP conference on Intelligent Network. The first one took place in Lappeeranta August 94, the second one in Copenhagen, August 95. The proceedings of both events have been published by Chapman&Hall. IFIP Working Group 6.7 on IN has concentrated with the research and development of Intelligent Networks architectures. First the activities have concentrated in service creation, service management, database issues, feature interaction, IN performance and advanced signalling for broadband services. Later on the research activities have turned towards the distribution of intelligence in networks and IN applications to multimedia and mobility. The market issues of new services have also been studied. From the system development point of view, topics from OMG and TINA-C have been considered.

The IFIP International Working Conference on Intelligent Networks '95 was held at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Copenhagen. The conference was organised jointly by the Center for Tete-Information at DTU and Tele Danmark Research! during August 30-31 1995 and was hosted by the Center for Tete-Information. The conference was sponsored by IFIP TC6. The papers contained in this book are edited versions of the papers from the conference and some of the tutorial presentations that were arranged prior to the conference. The mixture of tutorial papers and conference papers gives a broad and yet thorough coverage of activities and central areas of development in the IN world at this point in time. Future developments, especially in the area of extended mobility support and multimedia capabilities, are also pre sented. BACKGROUND The theme of the conference was the two major trends in Intelligent Networks (IN) develop ment: • ITU and ETSI based IN standards, such as CS-1 and the upcoming CS-2 and • long term development as undertaken by, for example, the TINA consortium and the Euro pean RACE and ACTS programmes. The present IN technology based on capability sets is on its way into the networks, and opera tors are pushing for open platforms to be deployed in the networks in the near future in order to obtain greater freedom in selecting platforms for service provisioning.

Intelligent Networks: Telecommunications Solutions for the 1990s addresses the telecommunications perspective of the 1990s and the problems involved in the transition from where we are now to where we should be within the next decade. It will appeal to managers as well as specialists interested in how communications and information technologies will evolve during the coming five to seven years. Valuable information on how they can use the new products becoming available to their company's advantage is also provided. This book is divided into two parts: Part 1 focuses on the strategic aspects of Intelligent Networks, while Part 2 looks into the dynamics and mechanics of computer networks and focuses on transition. Topics discussed in Part 1 include a look into advanced projects currently under development in the U.S. and Japan; the next big steps in deregulation from the viewpoint of the Federal Communications Commission; Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation in network operations; the establishment of global private networks with AI as the infrastructure; and a discussion regarding the merits of open architectures, ISDN, teleports and bypass, and photonics. Topics discussed in Part 2 include system integration; a case study of Union Bank of Switzerland and how an Intelligent Network documentation database can be used to increase the quality of network design, improve upon the reliability of its implementation, automate diagnostics and facilitate maintenance, provide quality histories for different vendors, and swamp the costs associated with networking. Part 2 also includes a discussion regarding the prerequisites for system reliability; management's role in cost-effectiveness; telecommunications tariffs and the architectural impact on costing; and "how to" tips for negotiating with vendors.

The papers in this volume were presented at the Second Annual Work shop on Active Middleware Services and were selected for inclusion here by the Editors. The AMS workshop was organized with support from both the National Science Foundation and the CAT center at the Uni versity of Arizona, and was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 1, 2000, in conjunction with the 9th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC-9). The explosive growth of Internet-based applications and the prolifer ation of networking technologies has been transforming most areas of computer science and engineering as well as computational science and commercial application areas. This opens an outstanding opportunity to explore new, Internet-oriented software technologies that will open new research and application opportunities not only for the multimedia and commercial world, but also for the scientific and high-performance computing applications community. Two emerging technologies - agents and active networks - allow increased programmability to enable bring ing new services to Internet based applications. The AMS workshop presented research results and working papers in the areas of active net works, mobile and intelligent agents, software tools for high performance distributed computing, network operating systems, and application pro gramming models and environments. The success of an endeavor such as this depends on the contributions of many individuals. We would like to thank Dr. Frederica Darema and the NSF for sponsoring the workshop.
