Die Methode ist abgeleitet aus der Psychoanalyse und arbeitet im wesentlichen mit und in der Übertragung, wobei davon ausgegangen wird, daß der Patient bereits Übertragungsbereitschaft in die Therapie mitbringt, d.h. den Therapeuten als primäre Bezugsperson sieht. Übertragungsbereitschaft hat generell jeder Mensch. Entdeckt wurde dies von Freud und konsequent angewandt und umgesetzt hat dies Davanloo. Die Methode wird sehr kontrovers diskutiert und kann auch kontroverse Gefühle bei Beobachtern des Verfahrens auslösen, wie z.B. Faszination oder Aggression und Abwehr.
