Degrees That Matter written by Natasha A. Jankowski and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-03 with Education categories.

Sponsored by Concerned by ongoing debates about higher education that talk past one another, the authors of this book show how to move beyond these and other obstacles to improve the student learning experience and further successful college outcomes. Offering an alternative to the culture of compliance in assessment and accreditation, they propose a different approach which they call the Learning System Paradigm. Building on the shift in focus from teaching to learning, the new paradigm encourages faculty and staff to systematically seek out information on how well students are learning and how well various areas of the institution are supporting the student experience and to use that information to create more coherent and explicit learning experiences for students. The authors begin by surveying the crowded terrain of reform in higher education and proceed from there to explore the emergence of this alternative paradigm that brings all these efforts together in a coherent way. The Learning System Paradigm presented in chapter two includes four key elements—consensus, alignment, student-centeredness, and communication. Chapter three focuses upon developing an encompassing notion of alignment that enables faculty, staff, and administrators to reshape institutional practice in ways that promote synergistic, integrative learning. Chapters four and five turn to practice, exploring the application of the paradigm to the work of curriculum mapping and assignment design. Chapter six focuses upon barriers to the work and presents ways to start and options for moving around barriers, and the final chapter explores ongoing implications of the new paradigm, offering strategies for communicating the impact of alignment on student learning. The book draws upon two recent initiatives in the United States: the Tuning process, adapted from a European approach to breaking down siloes in the European Union educational space; and the Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP), a document that identifies and describes core areas of learning that are common to institutions in the US. Many of the examples are drawn from site visit reports, self-reported activities, workshops, and project experience collected by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) between 2010 and 2016. In that six-year window, NILOA witnessed the use of Tuning and/or the DQP in hundreds of institutions across the nation.

Make sure your tech initiatives put students first with this robust guide for teachers and school leaders. With new artificial intelligence tools sweeping into districts and schools, educators must be able to assess the tools' benefits and limitations and determine if and how they might serve students. Teaching and leadership expert Tony Frontier provides the insight and knowledge necessary to use these tools effectively and responsibly. AI with Intention presents guiding principles and action steps that address both the issues and the opportunities that come with artificial intelligence. School leaders will learn how to cultivate a schoolwide understanding of AI, implement student-centered practices that support academic integrity, and ensure that effective teaching and learning remain the school’s top priority. Teachers will learn how to efficiently and effectively use AI tools to help their students engage in the productive struggle necessary for learning. New and evolving technologies can be exciting, but as Frontier points out, how we respond to innovation is more important than the innovation itself. This book is a roadmap for all educators looking to better understand and incorporate AI in ways that support—rather than undermine—effective teaching and learning.

With the enactment of No Child Left Behind, and its sanctions for schools that fail to make adequate yearly progress, NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) results are no longer afterthoughts. Instead, the results generate headlines and are at the forefront of discussion of what is working in schools and what needs to be changed. As the scrutiny of NAEP results has increased, the National Center for Education Statistics has provided more detailed reporting of the results and has increased the level of security of the assessment items. Both the level of detail and the concern for item security have played prominent roles in the development of this book. The foregoing changes make understanding NAEP and its consequences crucial for any educator. This book provides a background on NAEP, looks at 2003 mathematics achievement in different content areas, discusses data on who is teaching mathematics in the United States and examines students' perception of mathematics. Additionally, the book deals with results from NAEP broken down by race/ethnicity and by gender, analyses certain NAEP results with a focus on what is actually measured by those results and examines changes in NAEP over the years and what those changes mean for NAEP as a tool for understanding student learning.
