This special issue of Corrosion Engineering Science and Technology is dedicated to the study of corrosion of objects from historical sites. The issue contains contributions from the 2009 EUROCORR session on Corrosion of Archaeological and Heritage Artefacts organised by the European Federation of Corrosion's working party and commissioned articles on other key issues. The objective is to give the reader a broad understanding of corrosion of ancient materials, for the most part metal but also glass. Articles shed light on a range of analytical approaches related to the study of the complex systems that make up historical artifacts. In order to arrive at an understanding of the nanometric organisation of rust layers and interphases, such studies must be approached on a macroscopic scale. Techniques used include; macrophotography, synchrotron radiation and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that ensure results that are both exhaustive and representative of particular observations. This issue demonstrates the wealth of approaches possible in the study of the corrosion of ancient materials.

Conservation practitioners seek predictable and successful procedures and treatments for controlling corrosion of heritage metals that conform to aesthetic and ethical boundaries set by prevailing cultural, historical, and archaeological contexts. Understanding metallic corrosion and its prevention is informed by scientific research provided by heritage scientists, conservators themselves and, to a lesser extent, corrosion scientists who may be in academia or industry.Bridging the Gap: Corrosion Science For Heritage Contexts explores the decision-making processes for preserving heritage metals and examines the collaborative, interdisciplinary relationships that underpin them.Through themed chapters, the book is designed to develop and strengthen collaboration between these three groups of professionals, creating a synergy that benefits research and practice for the preservation of heritage metals. It builds an overview of metals conservation across a broad range of heritage contexts, from indoor museum displays to fixed outdoor structures and moving objects. Researchers and practitioners provide critical insights into corrosion problems within heritage, current corrosion mitigation procedures and the evidence supporting best practice guidance. The book will be a valuable reference resource for corrosion and corrosion protection scientists; heritage preservation scientists; conservation practitioners and students studying preservation of cultural objects. - Provides a detailed understanding of recent advancements and the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to addressing future challenges - Presents a contextual understanding of the corrosion of a range of heritage metals in different environments - Discusses novel characterization techniques as applied to heritage science - Overviews innovative protection treatments in use and under development - Includes extensive case studies from highly qualified experts who deal with numerous issues on the conservation of metal artifacts

Electrochemical Study Of Heat Treated Ss304 Stainless Steel Is Simulated Body Fluid written by Nik Mohd Nazairen Nik Cob and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Metals categories.
This thesis is entitled about the electrochemical study of heat treated SS304 stainless steel in simulated body fluid environment. Metallic materials are generally used for biomedical devices for various parts of the human body. When a metal device is implanted into human body, it is continually exposed to extracellular tissue fluid. The exposed metal surface of the implant undergoes electrochemical dissolution of material at a finite rate due to the interaction with body environment. This interaction can lead to either failure of the implant or have an adverse effect on the patient resulting in the rejection of the implant by the surrounding tissue or both. In conjunction with that, it is important to improve the corrosion resistance and wear properties by conducting the heat treatment processes. The objectives of this study are, to study the corrosion behaviour of the heat treated SS304 stainless steel in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) as simulated body environment and also to investigate the effect of heat treatment process to the corrosion rate of SS304 stainless steel in PBS and HBSS as simulated body environment. Heat treatment process, which is carburizing has been performed with different temperature and time. Carburizing is a process of adding Carbon to the surface. This is done by exposing the part to a carbon rich atmosphere at an elevated temperature and allows diffusion to transfer the carbon atoms into steel. The electrochemical study was conducted using a potentiostat WPG1000, interfaced to a computer in PBS and HBSS used for simulating human body fluid conditions. SS304 stainless steel show increased in corrosion rate after the carburizing process in simulated body fluid due to the resultant formation of chromium carbides.

Surface Alloying In Electrochemistry written by Ruxandra Vidu and has been published by ARA Publisher International Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-04 with Science categories.
Surface alloying and de-alloying in the underpotential deposition region has provoked interest in the research community due to the effects of surface modifications on the different surface properties. Gold, in particular, has been investigated due to its wide potential faradaic region on which the electrochemical depositions of many metals can be studied. Surface alloying in the underpotential deposition region has very interesting effects that can be exploit to modify the surface properties of the alloys. The surface alloying can change the electrochemical corrosion behavior as it has been observed by a decreased corrosion current density and increased charge-transfer resistance. For example, the Cr surface alloying improves the surface corrosion resistance of the modified Mg alloy in simulated body fluids, with applications in biomaterials. Because of the numerous researches performed in the thin film technologies for solar cell applications, the system Au-Cd-Te has attracted much interest. This book presents the comprehensive work done by in-situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy on Au-Cd and Au-Te. The author presents the issues of surface alloying and de-alloying in the underpotential deposition region in terms of the atomic structures as well as the growth morphologies of electrodeposited Te and Cd films on Au single crystals.
