Interrelations Between Essential Metal Ions And Human Diseases written by Astrid Sigel and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-27 with Science categories.

MILS-13 provides an up-to-date review on the relationships between essential metals and human diseases, covering 13 metals and 3 metalloids: The bulk metals sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, plus the trace elements manganese, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, molybdenum, and selenium, all of which are essential for life. Also covered are chromium, vanadium, nickel, silicon, and arsenic, which have been proposed as being essential for humans in the 2nd half of the last century. However, if at all, they are needed only in ultra-trace amounts, and because of their prevalence in the environment, it has been difficult to prove whether or not they are required. In any case, all these elements are toxic in higher concentrations and therefore, transport and cellular concentrations of at least the essential ones, are tightly controlled; hence, their homeostasis and role for life, including deficiency or overload, and their links to illnesses, including cancer and neurological disorders, are thoroughly discussed. Indeed, it is an old wisdom that metals are indispensable for life. Therefore, Volume 13 provides in an authoritative and timely manner in 16 stimulating chapters, written by 29 internationally recognized experts from 7 nations, and supported by more than 2750 references, and over 20 tables and 80 illustrations, many in color, a most up-to-date view on the vibrant research area of the Interrelations between Essential Metal Ions and Human Diseases.

Mitochondria In Health And Disease written by Paolo Bernardi and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-01 with Science categories.

Mitochondrial biology reinvented itself and became a new world that has attracted new scientists influencing every field of biomedical research. Mitochondrial research is growing and changing, as reflected by the exponential rise in the number of conferences covering mitochondrial biology and the role of mitochondria in diseases ranging from neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic diseases and genetic muscular dystrophies toimmunopathologies and cancer. As the awareness of the essential role of mitochondria in pathology rose, a demand for new approaches to measure mitochondrial function resulted in the robust development of new forms of microscopy and spectroscopy that opened windows into previously unknown aspects of mitochondrial biology. Two Conferences provided an outstanding representation of this state of affairs, the Gordon Research Conference Mitochondrial Dynamics and Signaling (Ventura, California March 17-22, 2019) and the FASEB Conference Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Dynamics in Health and Disease (Palm Springs, California May 19-24, 2019). These conferences well reflected the explosion of the field of mitochondrial communication within the cell, between cells and across organs, as well as the budding of a new field on the definition of individual mitochondria and the identification of subtypes with diverse structural features that may serve different specific functions. Through our participation in these meetings, we conceived the idea to cover some of these topics in the Research Topic “Mitochondria in Health and Disease” of Frontiers in Physiology - Mitochondrial Research Specialty Section. Fitting the tradition of Frontiers, our contributors have generated a platform incuding both solid data and new concepts, as radical and courageous as they can be. We are pleased with the outcome and we hope that our readers will share our enthusiasm.

Cellular Endocrinology in Health and Disease describes the underlying basis of endocrine function, providing an important tool to understand the fundamentals of endocrine diseases. Delivering a comprehensive review of the basic science of endocrinology, from cell biology to human disease, this work explores and dissects the function of a number of cellular systems. Among these are those whose function was not obvious until recently, including the endocrine functions of bone and the adipose tissue. Providing content that crosses disciplines, Cellular Endocrinology in Health and Disease details how cellular endocrine function contributes to system physiology and mediates endocrine disorders. A methods section proves novel and useful approaches across research focus that will be attractive to medical students, residents, and specialists in the field of endocrinology, as well as to those interested in cellular regulation. Editors Alfredo Ulloa-Aguirre and P. Michael Conn, experts in molecular and cellular aspects of endocrinology, deliver contributions carefully selected for relevance, impact, and clarity of expression from leading field experts. - Covers systemic endocrine action at the cellular level in both health and disease - Delivers information on the integration of cell identity and endocrinology - Incorporates recent developments in endocrinology to provide an up-to-date reference to researchers
