In the aftermath of two weekends in July 1952 when airspace over the American capital was filled with strange lights and radar contacts, the US Air Force sought to shut down the UFO issue, falling back on "identifications" such as balloons, weather anomalies and cockpit reflections. Yet the following two years saw numerous reports being filed about encounters with strange objects and lights in the skies over the United States - and elsewhere around the world. This book looks at pilot and aircrew sightings from 1953 and 1954 - two years' worth of incredible reports from across the globe involving fighter jet and transport crews, airliner captains and private pilots. Many witness statements were dismissed in favour of explanations that simply don't make sense when referring back to the only evidence - the testimony itself. This new book continues the author's look at aerial UFO encounters during the 1940s and 1950s - and the fevered attempts behind the scenes to explain the problem, and when that wasn't possible, to diminish its importance entirely.

Trigonometry, 4th Edition brings together all the elements that have allowed instructors and learners to successfully "bridge the gap" between classroom instruction and independent homework by overcoming common learning barriers and building confidence in students' ability to do mathematics. Written in a clear voice that speaks to students and mirrors how instructors communicate in lecture, Young's hallmark pedagogy enables students to become independent, successful learners. Varied exercise types and modeling projects keep the learning fresh and motivating. Young continues her tradition of fostering a love for succeeding in mathematics by introducing inquiry-based learning projects in this edition, providing learners an opportunity to master the material with more freedom while reinforcing mathematical skills and intuition.

Low probability of intercept (LPI) is that property of an emitter that because of its low power, wide bandwidth, frequency variability, or other design attributes, makes it difficult to be detected or identified by means of passive intercept devices such as radar warning, electronic support and electronic intelligence receivers, In order to detect LPI radar waveforms new signal processing techniques are required This thesis first develops a MATLAB toolbox to generate important types of LPI waveforms based on frequency and phase modulation The power spectral density and the periodic ambiguity function are examined for each waveforms These signals are then used to test a novel signal processing technique that detects the waveforms parameters and classifies the intercepted signal in various degrees of noise, The technique is based on the use of parallel filter (sub-band) arrays and higher order statistics (third- order cumulant estimator) Each sub-band signal is treated individually and is followed by the third-order estimator in order to suppress any symmetrical noise that might be present, The significance of this technique is that it separates the LPI waveforms in small frequency bands, providing a detailed time-frequency description of the unknown signal, Finally, the resulting output matrix is processed by a feature extraction routine to detect the waveforms parameters Identification of the signal is based on the modulation parameters detected,

On The Use Of Intercepts As Performance Measures written by Jim Musumeci and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with categories.

Intercepts have long been used as measures of abnormal performance in finance. Jensen's alpha made its debut in 1968, but more recently researchers have used intercepts from the Fama-French Three-Factor model and others as ex post performance measures. A positive intercept is taken as evidence that the stock (or portfolio) exceeded expectations, and conversely for a negative intercept. We find that even conditional on the premise that the model used is valid, the intercept's ability to detect abnormal performance is critically dependent on accurately estimating the slope(s). Unfortunately, the same unsystematic perturbation to stock returns that causes abnormal performance typically distorts this estimate of the slope, in which case the intercept can become misleading, in some cases so misleading that it will move in the direction opposite that of the perturbation. This paper quantifies the distortion in the intercept due to errors in estimating the slope(s). It also identifies necessary and sufficient conditions for the intercept to be so misleading as to move in the direction opposite that of the shock, estimates the frequency of these conditions, and provides hypothetical and actual examples. Finally, we offer an alternative approach that alleviates the problem.

This book is the first in a new series from Carol Ann Tomlinson and Caroline Cunningham Eidson exploring how real teachers incorporate differentiation principles and strategies throughout an entire instructional unit. Focusing on the middle grades, but applicable at all levels, Differentiation in Practice, Grades 5-9 will teach anyone interested in designing and implementing differentiated curriculum how to do so or how to do so more effectively. Included are * Annotated lesson plans for differentiated units in social studies, language arts, science, mathematics, and world/foreign language. * Samples of differentiated worksheets, product assignments, rubrics, and homework handouts. * An overview of the essential elements of differentiated instruction and guidelines for using the book as a learning tool. * An extended glossary and recommended readings for further exploration of key ideas and strategies. Each unit highlights underlying standards, delineates learning goals, and takes you step by step through the instructional process. Unit developers provide running commentary on their use of flexible grouping and pacing, tiered assignments and assessments, negotiated criteria, and numerous other strategies. The models and insight presented will inform your own differentiation efforts and help you meet the challenge of mixed-ability classrooms with academically responsive curriculum appropriate for all learners.
