This volume provides a strong theoretical introduction to the field of intercultural communication, offering practical examples of classroom activities, as well as presenting empirical research which demonstrates that intercultural communicative competence (ICC) can be developed effectively in specially tailored courses adjusted to the needs of learners. It presents a novel model of intercultural sensitivity assessment, and outlines the results of research into intercultural communicative competence conducted among the students of English Language Studies in state colleges in Poland. The cultural component in developing ICC as an extra-linguistic determinant is assigned particular prominence in the book. A thorough analysis of the empirical material collected from participant observation, the administered questionnaires and interviews allowed the most common values and attitudes held as components of intercultural sensitivity to be identified. The obtained findings are subsequently analyzed to predict the potential areas of communication misunderstandings and failures between Polish learners of English and representatives of other cultures.

This book presents a concise critical overview of the literature on intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and offers insights into research on this concept. As a novel contribution to the field, the book frames ICC in relation to other learner variables, such as motivation, willingness to communicate, communication apprehension, and self-perceived communication competence. Based on empirical data, the study proposes and tests a model of English majors’ ICC interacting with individual differences related to L2 communication. The findings highlight that students’ beliefs about their own performance, their apprehension from communication situations and their language learning motivation were successfully integrated into a new model of intercultural communicative competence as understood in an interactional EFL context.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 13,00 Punkte, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Institut für Anglistik), course: Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence in the EFL Classroom, language: English, abstract: Although intercultural concepts tend to essentialism and reductionism and thus run the risk of constructing artificial ethnic differences and stereotypes, the existing models are quite useful for teaching purposes as well as for the purpose of this paper which is to analyse a textbook for German high school in order to find out more about its potential to help develop ICC. In my view, using both terms interchangeably is acceptable as long as one considers culture to be a dynamic, negotiable phenomenon (cf. Freitag 2008). Regarding the actual teaching I agree with Hu (2009) that intercultural concepts in spite of their deficits cannot and should not be replaced immediately, but gradually with the narrative-constructive concepts of intercultural learning in mind. The national KMK-Bildungsstandards (2010: 12f.) set rather high standards for ICC emphasising the role of literature and diversity of texts in developing ICC. Landeskunde should be taught as well, but not only to impart fact knowledge, but to enable students to communicate in real intercultural situations. Generally speaking, the task of a teacher is to prepare his students for the challenges of future life and they are definitely going to take place in a globalized, inter- or transcultural world. According to the White Paper on Intercultural Learning by the Council of Europe, in a democracy, we do not only have the opportunity, but the duty to act as active, responsible, reflective and self-critical citizens, respectful of others and to help build a peaceful, democratic world. (2008: 29). I think that helping students to achieve this aim is best done by enhancing their discourse ability (more in chapter 2.1) Since the most common way of teaching EFL in Germany is by using a textbook (cf. Kurtz 2010), this paper will try to find out how well this can be done in regard to developing ICC based on the realities of the FL classroom. In order to do so first of all we have to clarify the basic theoretical concepts which are needed to understand the idea of intercultural communication and consequently the competences which are required for the successful accomplishment of that interactive task. In a second step I will conduct a small qualitative research exploring and evaluating both the theoretical ICC learning models and the textbook New Context.

Scientific Study from the year 2012 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, course: Applied Linguistics, language: English, abstract: It is until recently that many language teachers and educationalists have started to preach the idea that second or foreign language teaching should stress the salience of teaching towards enabling learners to connect with other people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and mediate appropriately and effectively in various cross-cultural communication situations. Thus, so as to be open and flexible towards other cultures, the acquisition of intercultural communicative competence has become a serious concern for any individuals seeking to become competent intercultural speakers. The present study aims at assessing and investigating the intercultural communicative competence and its development among EFL Moroccan university students and the extent to which these students know about the cultural aspects of the target Anglo-American cultures as well as the degree to which their intercultural communicative competence has evolved based on the model presented by Byram (1997).

The volume Developing Intercultural Competence through English: Focus on Ukrainian and Polish Cultures edited by Anna Niżegorodcew, Yakiv Bystrov and Marcin Kleban offers a valuable result of a joint intercultural project between two universities from the neighbouring countries of Poland and Ukraine. Among the mass of books on intercultural communication the proposed volume distinguishes itself by three features: unusual format combining the work of both scholars and students, the focus on the intercultural approach, and practical designation. It also stresses the increasing awareness in the modern world that teaching/learning English serves the purpose of developing general intercultural competence and not building the knowledge about the English speaking world. [...] The choice of topics [...] indicates an interesting cultural difference - Ukrainian inclination to focus on the characteristic and attractive aspects of their own culture and Polish on the problematic and the difficult. Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: Communicative competence globally becomes the aim of English language teaching and learning. So far, the aim of any English course should develop students’ communicative competence to the extent that they will be able to express themselves naturally, proficiently and appropriately. This study is conducted to check English language secondary school teachers’ knowledge about communicative competence elements and to what extent they are able to teach communicative competence elements to secondary school students. The researcher uses a non-probability sampling, taking into account the representativeness of the whole districts of Yaff’ea. Seventy English language teachers (n=70) at secondary schools in Yaff’ea responded to the questionnaire. Moreover, the researcher observed fourteen English language teachers (n=14) to check their classroom practices. The researcher followed the multi-methods research design. Data were collected by using a semi-closed ended questionnaire and a structured classroom observation. Both data were analyzed quantitatively. The validity was checked depending on the pilot study and referees whereas the reliability was checked by using a test-retest method with an interval time of two weeks. The findings of this study showed that teachers have to some extent good perceptions about communicative competence elements. However, strict contradictions were found between teachers’ perceptions and their actual practice. Moreover, the study revealed that teachers face difficulties in teaching communicative competence with different levels of complexity among its elements. Teachers neglected teaching phonology which is a basic element of linguistic competence as well as they taught vocabulary and grammar using traditional approaches. With reference to sociolinguistic competence, discourse competence and strategic competence, the study reported similar problems whether in the contradictions between what teachers believe in and what they actually do, or the overwhelmingly neglection of sub-elements. Finally, the study reflects the dominancy that teachers play and the passive orientation for learners.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2, University of Education Ludwigsburg, course: Language and Culture for Young Learners Seminar, language: English, abstract: In this work the author analyses the usage of a picture book as a key to develop intercultural communicative competence in primary schools with an "English as a foreign language"-setting. In the paper at hand, the approach is rather humanistic and based on literature studies. It serves for a broad introduction into the relations of culture and education and is structured in the following way: First, we will define the terms culture and ICC more closely. A lot of details will deal with what ICC is about. Then, I present two examples of greater out-groups which have to face prejudices. The next point will deal with the connection of ICC and the primary school, which is followed by the link of ICC with picture books. Moreover, there is a detailed analysis of Joanna Troughton's "The Tiger Child" in relation to the given context. Last but not least, a creative teaching idea for a couple of lessons, thematising "The Tiger Child", is presented, and the work is ended with a compact conclusion. Among the most important resources are the Byram (1997) work, books of facts like the Enc. Britannica and the seminar slides. To begin with, we have to clarify what culture means. The Oxford English Dictionary (2006) speaks of culture as the arts and other instances of human intellectual achievement regarded as a whole; refined understanding or appreciation of this; or the art, customs, ideas, and social behaviour of a nation, people, or group. The "Pyramid of mental programming" model by Hofstede & Hofstede (2005) specifies culture as specific to a group or category - a learned field or dimension-lying on a basis called "human nature" which is universal and inherited. "Personality" forms the top of this pyramid as something which is specific to the individual and learned but also inherited.
