New Perspectives on (Im)Politeness and Interpersonal Communication gathers eleven studies by prominent scholars, which explore issues related to (im)politeness in human communication. The study of linguistic (im)politeness is undoubtedly one of the central concerns in the field of pragmatics, as attested to by the numerous conferences and journals currently dedicated to the topic, the various theoretical models and approaches developed or developing so far, and the seemingly endless list of insightful and inspiring empirical studies tackling the topic from a wide variety of angles. This volume contributes to the subfield of social pragmatics by putting together works that review the state of the art of (im)politeness studies, analysing (im)politeness in media contexts like the Internet or dubbed films and other contexts, looking into the effects and consequences of some speech acts for social interaction, drawing implications for language teaching, and approaching some of the linguistic mechanisms which help to communicate (im)politeness. Resulting from the efforts made by specialists in the field, the chapters in this volume offer additional evidence that examining the complexity of interpersonal communication from different standpoints can benefit a more complete understanding of social interaction in general. Their scope and practical applications demonstrate the transversality and versatility of interpersonal communication. The editors hope that these works will retain scholars’ interest and attention for some time to come and spark off further research.

Politeness In Turkey And China written by Daniel Z. Kadar and has been published by Bloomsbury Academic this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-03 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

There is a long standing gap in the field of politeness studies, namely, the exploration of Turkish and Chinese politeness systems before the modern era. This book looks at (im)politeness in Turkey and China, and at Turko-Sino relations, from the 10th century to just before the modern day. Linguistic politeness research has become one of the most actively developing fields in pragmatic and sociolinguistics studies. Brown and Levinson's seminal 1987 study launched an active interest, owing much to the prominent role of politeness and impoliteness in both our daily interactions and our understanding of the 'cultural other'. Despite all of this, no comparative intercultural diachronic analysis has been published so far. The work explores politeness and the larger communicative situation in empires at the two ends of the Silk Road, which were at one point the gates of cultural exchange between the East and the West. It provides insights into the ideological, semantic and the discursive aspects of politeness in both China and Turkey.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, , language: English, abstract: It is the aim of this paper to analyze how politeness currently is – and how politeness potentially could be – taught in foreign language classrooms. The focus will be on how foreign language students are – or could be – instructed to perform speech acts that usually require forms of politeness. Teaching politeness will not be reduced to the introduction of cultural stereotypes and basic rules of behavior in language teaching, it will rather be understood as all forms of the pragmatic knowledge required to develop true intercultural communicative competence in the foreign language student. It is argued that currently teaching pragmatics only plays a minor role in foreign language teaching, but that this knowledge is crucial to build up intercultural communicative competence as it is demanded by the CEFR and foreign language curricula. To prove this thesis, current textbooks for teaching English as a foreign language will be examined for teaching activities that include aspects of foreign language pragmatics or politeness. In a subsequent chapter, the didactics and methodology of instructional pragmatics will be discussed on the basis of literature from the field of pedagogy.

Wrapping Culture written by Joy Hendry and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Wrapping Culture examines problems of intercultural communication and the possibilities for misinterpretation of the familiar in an unfamiliar context. Starting with an examination of Japanese gift-wrapping, Joy Hendry demonstrates how our expectations are often influenced by cultural factors which may blind us to an appreciation of underlying intent. She extends this approach to the study of polite language as the wrapping of thoughts and intentions, garments as body wrappings, constructions and gardens as wrapping of space. Hendry shows how this extends even to the ways in which people may be wrapped in seating arrangements, or meetings and drinking customs may be constrained by temporal versions of wrapping. Throughout the book, Hendry considers ways in which groups of people use such symbolic forms to impress and manipulate one another, and points out a Western tendency to underestimate such nonverbal communication, or reject it as mere decoration. She presents ideas that should be valid in any intercultural encounter and demonstrates that Japanese culture, so often thought of as a special case, can supply a model through which we can formulate general theories about human behavior.
