Interesting History of the Columbia River Definition of Columbia River "A river in southwest Canada and the northwest United States, flowing south and west from southeast British Columbia through Washington along the boundary between Washington and Oregon and into the Pacific. 1214 (1955 km) long." http: //www.dictionary.com/browse/columbia--river John Melish; A Geographical Description of the United States: With the Contiguous Countries, Including Mexico and the West Indies; Intended as an Accompaniment of Melish's Map of These Countries; AT Goodrich; 1826 John Melish writes: "Historical View. - The Spaniards claimed the discovery of Columbia River, and called it Ectra de Ceta. In 1791, Captain Gray, an American, in the ship Columbia from Boston, entered the river, and gave it the name of Columbia after that of his vessel; and this name it has since retained. The river was afterwards explored by Lieutenant Broughton, under the command of Vancouver, who ascended about 100 miles. In 1805 the river and its waters to the eastward were explored by Lewis and Clark, who spent the winter of 1805-6 on its shores, near the outlet; and it is to the extraordinary enterprise of these great men that the public are indebted for nearly all that is known of the country between the state of Missouri and the ocean. A settlement has been made by the fur traders upon the banks of the river, called Astoria, and it is said to be in a flourishing state." Excerpt from The Columbia River Its History, Its Myths, Its Scenery Its Commerce The kindly reception accorded to this book, by which all of the first edition and nearly all of the second have passed into the hands of readers, has led author and publishers to believe that there is such a continuing demands as to justify a new edition. There are relatively few changes. Such errors as appeared in the earlier editions have been corrected, so far as discovered. A few paragraphs have been rewritten. The new features will be found to embody developments on and in connection with the River since the first publication. The chief additional points of interest are: the completion of the Celilo Canal; the continuance of the jetties at the River mouth and systematic dredging by which a depth of forty feet at low tide has been secured; the inauguration of an era of ship-building during the present year; and, most interesting of all to the general public, the Columbia Scenic Highway, one of the noblest works of the kind in the world. These interesting improvements make the wonders of the Columbia more available to the tourist, but the great features, - the lakes, the rapids, the snow-peaks, the cliffs, the waterfalls, the solemn forests, - these all exist as in Creation's dawn, and the human works are, after all, merely accessory. The Columbia River is the dominant river system of the Northwest United States. It is a river of many uses--hydropower, fisheries, and irrigation--and was known by many names--Columbia's River, the Big River, and even River in the Chickadee Territory. It is the fourth-largest river by volume in North America, draining parts of seven states and the province of British Columbia. Because of its unique location close to the ocean, its tall mountain ranges, its steep drop from headwaters to the ocean, its deep and solid canyon, and its huge volume of clear, cold water, the Columbia River evolved as one of the great salmon and hydropower rivers of the world. And therein lies the chief paradox of the Columbia--the conflict of its natural history with its human history. Today, the river is an organic machine, in the words of historian Richard White, part nature, part machine. This book briefly explores the natural and human histories of the river through photographs from historical archives, government agencies, and personal collections.

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton Press Teeming with the history of the Pacific Northwest, the mighty Columbia River is one of the longest rivers in North America. Surprisingly, however, this 1,243-mile-long river begins not in the familiar Columbia River Gorge separating Washington and Oregon but rather 1,000 miles upstream, near the British Columbia–Alberta border. Long before Capt. Robert Gray discovered the river's entrance in 1792 near what is today Astoria, Oregon, it served as a water highway and a critical source of food for Native people and the earliest Hudson’s Bay Company pioneers. Today it continues to function as a watercourse for barges and ships carrying commercial goods to the world. The Columbia has, however, been an enemy at times. Before dams controlled its flow, vicious rapids claimed lives, and the river, swollen by melting ice from Canada’s Columbia Icefield, often flooded towns as distant as Portland, Oregon. At the same time, it has always offered stunning scenery. Read about the early river steamers on both sides of the border. Ponder the travels of salmon. Who built the Grand Coulee and Bonneville Dams? What happened at the Hanford Project? Explore with David Thompson, who discovered the source of the river. Meet the real people who call the Columbia River shores their home. The book's four sections as well as the Travel and Trivia section have been updated to expand our knowledge of the towns and people along the river.
