India‘s plan to interlink its rivers (ILR) and to transfer water may, according to one set of views, generate positive benefits through improved and expanded irrigation

The National River Linking Project (NRLP) was proposed as the solution to water-related problems in India. It envisages transferring the waters of the water surplus basins to the water deficient basins in the south and the west. Today India coping with annual floods and droughts, both occurring at the same time in different regions, has been a major concern for India. These concerns are more acute today as the growing population and the resultant increase in water demand place a heavy burden on the unevenly distributed water resources, and also cause huge economic losses to the financially vulnerable groups of the population. This ambitious project initiated at that time when there was strong opposition to large dams. Environmentalists questioned on the ecological cost of large dams, while the NGOs and civil society probed the social cost of people displacement. This book provides an essential guide to researchers, it offers: various aspects of National River Linking Project in present scenario. Simply explained, Interlinking of Rivers in India: A Socio-economic Environmental evaluation is an important book bringing together diverse viewpoints from opponents and state agencies and regulators, for all who wish to make a difference in how to plan, conserve and manage our Rivers water.

Water conflicts in India have now percolated to every level. They are aggravated by the relative paucity of frameworks, policies and mechanisms to govern the use of water resources. Based on the premise that understanding and documenting different types of water conflict cases in all their complexity would contribute to informed public debate and facilitate their resolution, Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India, a collaborative initiative of the WWF project ‘Dialogue on Water, Food and Environment’, documented a number of such case studies. One of its kind in India, this book brings together an impressive sixty-three case studies – summarized status of the conflicts, the issues involved and their current position – and gives us a glimpse into ‘the million revolts’ that are brewing around water. While recognizing that each conflict is a microcosm of wider conflicts, the editors have classified these cases into eight broad themes that try to capture the dominant aspect of the conflict. These are: contending water uses; dams and displacement; equity-access-allocations; micro-level conflicts; water quality; trans-boundary conflicts; privatization; sand excavation and mining. With a mix of academics and activists as contributors, the book makes an important contribution to a new discourse on water in general, and water conflicts and conflict resolution in particular.
