The Separation and the Reunion Forum has as its aim the raising of awareness on the sometimes traumatic effects of broken attachments, separation and loss on families. This book is a compilation of some of the papers from their Sixth Annual Conference, which addresses the history of the deliberate separation of families through slavery from Africa to the Americas and the Caribbean and the lack of attention to the affective issues on the enslaved. It is set in the context of attachment theory and aims to discuss the remnants of the psychological trauma of slavery on the descendants of those who had been enslaved. The papers explore the migrants’ relationships with the past as they struggle to cope with their lives in the present, and the need to consider plans for their future in a society which in some aspects retains attitudes and practices regrettably unchanged since emancipation. The book aims to inform about the background of African Caribbean people now living in Britain. It also aims to promote discussion among those who have experienced separation and loss, among teachers, social workers, probation officers, and officers of Youth Offending teams and those who work with individuals of African Caribbean backgrounds. It gives information on the concepts of Attachment Theory and gives examples of how counsellors and therapists may utilise these in working with individuals whose present behaviour may indicate the adverse effects of suffered broken attachments separation and loss.

The literature on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) points out either its negative or positive impacts on global and domestic governance. However, such a dichotomy is too simplistic, not least because it tells us little about the complexity of change in the nature of the BRI as it is implemented. This book argues that the BRI manifests an intricate dynamic comprising two contradictory tendencies: Xi Jinping’s top-down and centralised approach to policymaking, with its focus on producing robust Chinese actors who can succeed in a competitive global economy; and a fragmented and decentralised reality made up of an expanding range of actors engaged in realising myriad BRI projects on the ground. The co-existence of these two contradictory tendencies implies that the BRI has a multidimensional impact on global and domestic governance in general, and on the role of Japan in countries where BRI projects take place. Japan matters because of its ‘in-between’ position between non-Western donors and the Development Assistance Committee of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, a position that offers a unique dimension to a frequently dichotomous discussion of the BRI. Globally, China’s promotion of the BRI has strengthened an aspect of global governance, the ‘open economy’, while at the same time fostering the Chinese nuance of a ‘planned economy’. Domestically, a Chinese-style approach to state management and investment without political conditions may set back democratisation efforts in emerging countries, but the BRI has also given rise to a renewed sense of democracy in those countries. These multidimensional impacts enable China and Japan to find an on-the-ground complementarity in their approaches to development aid in relation to future cooperation.

Relational theory starts from the ontological fact of our being in networks of relationships and draws out what this means for theories of knowledge and for moral and political theory. This book uses insights from feminist relational theory to outline the ontological, epistemological, and moral/political implications of this theoretical approach. The chapters in this volume focus on relationships of power and oppression; how these relationships shape who is taken to have knowledge and who is dismissed or ignored; and what all of this means for theories of equality, justice, and moral and political theory more generally. Past studies have suggested that offenders desist from crime due to a range of factors, such as familial pressures, faith based interventions or financial incentives. To date, little has been written about the relationship between desistance and racialisation. This book seeks to bring much needed attention to this under-researched area of criminological inquiry. Martin Glynn builds on recent empirical research in the UK and the USA and uses Critical Race Theory as a framework for developing a fresh perspective about black men’s desistance. This book posits that the voices and collective narrative of black men offers a unique opportunity to refine current understandings of desistance. It also demonstrates how new insights can be gained by studying the ways in which elements of the desistance trajectory are racialised.
