Record prices and substantial profits have been and still are being achieved on the art market. Yet anyone who wants to get involved needs to be informed: what distinguishes the English type of auction from one in the Netherlands? What differentiates a vintage from a period, modern, or estate print? Dirk Boll, managing director of Christie's in Zurich, explains this and other technical terms while providing us with insight into the rapidly changing art market: the increasingly symbiotic relationship between auctioneers and art dealers, the strategies used by the big auction houses, recognizing and creating trends, the profiles of the individual art fairs, promising new areas for collectors, and the future development of the art market are just some of the fascinating themes the expert knowledgeably and humorously deals with in concise chapters. A trained lawyer, Boll is as competent at shedding light on the legal parameters regulating the acquisition of art as he is in elucidating the difficulties surrounding looted art and restitution procedures. This book examines the art markets of the Global South while questioning, based on the heterogeneity of the selected contributions, the very idea of its existence in the context of the global art market. Gathering new research by recognized scholars, you will discover different markets from the so-called Global South, their structure, the external determinants affecting their behavior, their role in the art system’s development, and how they articulate with other agents at the local, regional, and international level. In this publication, an important wealth of research on various African countries stands out, providing an unprecedented overview of the markets in that region. This volume originates from the TIAMSA conference The Art Market and the Global South: New Perspectives and Plural Approaches, held in Lisbon in 2019.

In this, the latest TEFAF report on the international art and antiques market, Dr Clare McAndrew of Arts Economics analyses the 47.4 billion global art trade in 2013. This annual survey has become the established source of data on an increasingly important economic sector, which now supports 2.5 million jobs worldwide in over 308,000 businesses. This year the emphasis is on the US, the worlds largest art market, and on China, its fastest growing rival in recent years. The report draws attention to the part played by art fairs in attracting international collectors to a single location. TEFAF Maastricht, which last year drew over 70,000 visitors from sixty one countries, is a leading example of the economic benefits of such events. We are again grateful to Anthony Browne for organizing this annual research programme for TEFAF. Willem Baron van Dedem President Ben Janssens Chairman
