This volume makes a unique contribution to the finance and investment literature by bringing together in one place insightful analyses of three major issues affecting world financial markets. Written by a distinguished group of academics, policymakers, and financial executives, the chapters collected here cover international imbalances and international policy coordination, the international debt crisis, and global financial markets. Although the contributors express a variety of approaches and viewpoints, they are united in emphasizing the growing importance of financial markets in the international economy. In Part I, the contributors deal with the long-standing question of how to deal with international trade imbalances. Their works take dramatically different positions regarding the causes and cures of the U.S trade deficit and the associated fiscal deficit but highlight the increasingly recognized role of financial flows. Among the other issues discussed are exchange rate variations, future challenges to the international monetary system, the foreign exchange market, and central banking. The second section includes six essays which examine aspects of the international debt crisis. The contributors show that the debt crisis is complicated by the greater role of private international financial flows to developing countries than was the case twenty years ago. Separate chapters present an overview of the international debt crisis, look at the debtor position, review the history of the LDC debt crisis, and explore current developments. Part III examines developments in the structure and functioning of global financial markets and contains separate discussions of futures and options markets, Japanese financial markets, international equity market links, implications for investors, and more. Must reading for policymakers and students of international finance, this book is also an ideal set of readings for courses in international economics.

This book focuses on the international financial problems of developing countries and the ways in which international financial policy might be used to alleviate them. A strong theme that emerges is that developing countries cannot be treated as a homogenous group from the viewpoint of their international financial problems. At the very least, a distinction needs to be drawn between the newly industrialising countries of Latin America and South-east Asia and the low income countries of Africa and Asia.

"This book deals with the financial side of international economics and covers all aspects of international finance. There are many books and articles by exponents of alternative points of view. I know of no other book that provides the scope, balance, objectivity and rigor of the book." (Professor Jerome L. Stein, Brown University) From the reviews: "In this survey of international finance and open-economy macroeconomics, Gandolfo succeeds in meeting the needs of advanced undergraduate or lower-level graduate students through a largely textual and graphical approach, while at the same time presenting in the appendices explicit mathematical analyses for more advanced graduate students." This book reviews the contemporary issues in international monetary and financial economics (such as financial liberalisation, crisis, exchange rate determination, capital control, domestic capital market reform, etc.) in an emerging financial market such as Thailand from a welfare economic p- spective, highlighting the social welfare implications of these issues. This 3 book also suggests a normative social approach (as formalised in the new welfare economics paradigm) (see Islam 2001a,b for a discussion of this ; concept) for analysing and addressing these issues and formulating appr- riate policies. Undertaking the above tasks, the asymmetric information paradigm 3 and other elements of the new welfare economics paradigm are adapted in analysing the international financial issues of Thailand, their causes and economic and social welfare consequences. The last two decades have been a critical period for Thailand’s dev- opment. From the mid-1980s to the beginning of the 1990s, the Thai economy performed remarkably well and was a showcase for the world economy. Having achieved a double-digit growth rate for a brief period, Thailand in the late 1980s was regarded as the fastest growing economy in the world by the World Bank and the IMF. With prospects of further rapid economic growth, the Thai government accepted Article VIII of the IMF, which required Thailand to liberalise and deregulate its financial system.

Principles of International Finance, first published in 1988, provides a comprehensive introduction to international finance which is rapidly becoming an increasingly important branch of international economics. The book is structured so that it can easily be adopted as a complete one-semester course in international finance and is divided into the four major divisions of international finance: The Foreign Exchange Market and the Balance of Payments; Exchange Rate Systems; Equilibrium and the Adjustment Process and The Post-War International Financial System. This book is designed for economics and business undergraduates studying international finance for the first time. It is non-mathematical and presumes no more than a general background in macroeconomics.
