François Rigaux, who died in 2013, was a great figure of Belgian legal scholarship and left a deep impression on many generations of students from Louvain. Essentially known for his pioneering work in private international law, his legal culture was by no means limited to that field, while his critical thinking on the law radiated far beyond Europe. A man of strong-held political convictions, he fought many battles, which led him along the paths of public international law in search of a fairer world. Counsel for the Islamic Republic of Iran before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal and judge ad hoc appointed by Iran in a case brought against the United States before the International Court of Justice, he directed at Louvain the doctoral research of several Iranian researchers who later became important figures in the Iranian academic and administrative world, among them is Prof. Mohsen Mohebi the co-editor of this Mélanges. Initiated in Tehran, this bilingual volume of homage brings together twenty contributions on the work of François Rigaux, the jurisprudence of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal as well as various current issues in public international law, including that of economic sanctions.

This Critical Concepts series (a Routledge Major Work) is an anthology of influential works on international law. The collection covers the principal facets of both classical and contemporary international law. In making their selection, J.H.H. Weiler and Alan T. Nissel consulted with a wide range of experts and chose those pieces that in their view both shaped the field and have illuminated its contours. These articles have, or are expected to have, considerable "staying power." By juxtaposing classical with more contemporary articles, this anthology illustrates the motion of international law--the evolution of doctrine, practice and historiography of the field. The series begins with a consideration of the fundamental systemic (Volume I) and conceptual (Volumes II and III ) features of International Law. It then maps out substantive aspects (Volumes IV and V). The collection concludes (Volume VI) with what the authors call "multi-inter-disciplinary" approaches to the field.

In recent years States have made more and more extensive use of the International Court of Justice for the judicial settlement of disputes. Despite being declared by the Courts Statute to have no binding force for States other than the parties to the case, its decisions have come to constitute a body of jurisprudence that is frequently invoked in other disputes, in international negotiation, and in academic writing. This jurisprudence, covering a wide range of aspects of international law, is the subject of considerable ongoing academic examination; it needs however to be seen against the background, and in the light, of the Courts structure, jurisdiction and operation, and the principles applied in these domains. The purpose of this book is thus to provide an accessible and comprehensive study of this aspect of the Court, and in particular of its procedure, written by a scholar who has had unique opportunities of close observation of the Court in action. This distillation of direct experience and expertise makes it essential reading for all those who study, teach or practise international law.
