During the 2004-05 school year, over 10,000 international student-athletes competed for National Collegiate Athletic Association schools (NCAA, 2006b). Few researchers have examined how international student-athletes' college experiences compare to domestic student-athletes. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to adaptation to college, (b) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to their view of the purpose of college sports, and (c) to determine whether student-athletes' views on the purpose of college sport help predict social adjustment to college or institutional attachment. A national sample of international and domestic student-athletes from 11 NCAA Division I institutions completed an instrument comprised of the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales from the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (Baker and Siryk, 1989) and the seven factor scales from a modified version of the Purpose of Sport Questionnaire developed by Duda (1989). A total of 288 student-athletes completed the instrument, 174 of whom were international student-athletes representing 49 different countries. Results showed international student-athletes scored significantly lower on the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales compared to domestic studentathletes. Among the seven purpose of sport factors, only the factor of competitiveness revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, with international student-athletes ranking the factor lower than domestic student-athletes. None of the purpose of sport factors significantly predicted social adjustment to college for either domestic or international student-athletes. Several purpose of sport factors significantly predicted institutional attachment, however. A discussion of results and their implications are outlined.

This study examined the effect of the increase in the number of international student-athletes in Division I college athletics on the experience of international and domestic student-athletes, specifically by investigating the perceptions of female athletes participating in sports that have high percentages of international student-athlete involvement. Scholarship opportunities, school choice, playing time, and recruiting are all areas that were explored through a questionnaire. This study potentially fills a gap in the research regarding the increased participation by international student-athletes on both the domestic and international student-athlete experience. Results indicated that international and domestic student-athletes had different perceptions of their recruiting experience than student-athletes of the opposite status, and further, different factors were important in terms of school choice. Both domestic and international student-athletes believed that there were similar scholarship opportunities in their sport, regardless of status, and further, that their sport had a high number of international participants.

The spread of Covid-19 has been a disruptive force on society, wreaking unprecedented havoc on people's daily lives. This unwelcomed disruption has mirrored elements of forced transition, bringing psychological symptoms and the psychosocial impact previously seen in athletes whose athletic careers are unexpectedly terminated by injury, deselection, or another similar traumatic event. For International Student-Athletes (ISA), the transition to college is a period marked by multiple challenges since they have to adjust to a new academic, athletic, social, and cultural environment. Covid-19, perceived as a significant transition, hit the first-year ISAs while going through the traditional process of transitioning to college. This study explored the perceptions of Greek student-athletes who experienced the Covid-19 transition during their first year of college in the United States. Aspects of subjective well-being and identity formation were assessed. Using the Consensual Qualitative Research methodology (CQR), findings suggest that studying and playing at a competitive level was the top motivation for Greek ISAs to pursue a degree in the United States. The American experience favorably impacted Greek ISAs (e.g., maturity, open-mindedness, professionalism), while the compulsory athletic restriction and social isolation during the Covid-19 outbreak posed additional psychosocial challenges.

"Research has shown that personality variables, such as optimism and coping, and integration into the college environment predict students' adjustment to college (Aspinwall & Taylor, 1992; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1975). However, none of the research available has investigated how the combination of personality characteristics and integration into the sport environment impact the college adjustment of athletes (Melendez, 2007). The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between optimism, coping strategies, and sport integration as it influences college student-athlete adjustment. A questionnaire packet was used to measure optimism, coping, perceptions of sport integration, and college adjustment. Results of multiple regression analysis revealed that commitment to one's team and sport goals, and one's use of positive reframing, instrumental support, denial, and self blame were significant predictors of athletes' overall adjustment to college. This finding supports the hypothesis that for student-athletes successful integration into specific sport structures in combination with certain personality characteristics can effectively improve adjustment to college."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between college adjustment, self-efficacy, academic buoyancy and academic motivation among student-athletes of color at a predominantly White institution (PWI) that participate in Division I sports. Historically, institutions of higher education, founded by White male educators and businessmen, designed their schools primarily for White students. Students of color where not permitted to attend such institutions nor compete against them athletically. After the integration of schools, college administrators and coaches saw the opportunity to recruit student-athletes of color in an effort to create winning teams, fill stadium seats, and to generate revenue. Some PWI campuses were not as welcoming to student-athletes of color because they lacked diversity, some did not foster a welcoming racial or cultural atmosphere, and many were not as inclusive. Some athletes faced discrimination and racism on campus which may have been a factor in their academic motivation. This study examined the perception student-athletes of color have of their non-cognitive factors (i.e. college adjustment, self-efficacy, and academic buoyancy), athletic status, and race and how it influenced their motivation (i.e. intrinsic or extrinsic) toward academics. Twenty-eight Division I student-athletes of color at a large PWI public university participated in the study. Each athlete completed a 20-minute Likert-type survey that asked questions about their college experience, perception of adjustment, self-efficacy, academic buoyancy, and motivation toward academics. The results of the study found college adjustment, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation toward academics to relate among student-athletes of color. No significant relation was found between the three variables of self-efficacy, academic buoyancy and overall academic motivation as hypothesized by the researcher.

The number of international student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics at American colleges and universities has been growing steadily (NCAA, 1996a). As the recruiting landscape for college coaches expands into international arenas, knowledge about international student-athletes is becoming increasingly pertinent. Research in this area, however, has been scant. This study was undertaken to determine how well international student-athletes were adjusting to college relative not only to their American teammates, but also to the general student body, which included both domestic and international students. In addition to comparing adjustment levels, this study investigated antecedents and outcomes of adjustment that were specific to student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Acculturation Model was developed to serve as a framework for examining relationships associated with the acculturation process faced by both international and domestic student-athletes. Data were collected from students and student-athletes enrolled at a large Midwestern university. The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) (Baker & Siryk, 1989) was sent to international students (n = 317), domestic students (n = 379), international student-athletes (n = 50), and domestic student-athletes (n = 269). All student-athletes in the sample received an additional questionnaire entitled Factors Associated with Student-Athlete Adjustment to College (FASAAC).
