This study examined the effect of the increase in the number of international student-athletes in Division I college athletics on the experience of international and domestic student-athletes, specifically by investigating the perceptions of female athletes participating in sports that have high percentages of international student-athlete involvement. Scholarship opportunities, school choice, playing time, and recruiting are all areas that were explored through a questionnaire. This study potentially fills a gap in the research regarding the increased participation by international student-athletes on both the domestic and international student-athlete experience. Results indicated that international and domestic student-athletes had different perceptions of their recruiting experience than student-athletes of the opposite status, and further, different factors were important in terms of school choice. Both domestic and international student-athletes believed that there were similar scholarship opportunities in their sport, regardless of status, and further, that their sport had a high number of international participants.

College students are now regarded as consumers, not students, and nowhere is the growth and exploitation of the university more obvious than in the realm of college sports, where the evidence is in the stadiums built with corporate money, and the crowded sporting events sponsored by large conglomerates. The contributors to Sport and the Neoliberal University examine how intercollegiate athletics became a contested terrain of public/private interests. They look at college sports from economic, social, legal, and cultural perspectives to cut through popular mythologies regarding intercollegiate athletics and to advocate for increased clarity about what is going on at a variety of campuses with regard to athletics. Focusing on current issues, including the NCAA, Title IX, recruitment of high school athletes, and the Penn State scandal, among others, Sport and the Neoliberal University shows the different ways institutions, individuals, and corporations are interacting with university athletics in ways that are profoundly shaped by neoliberal ideologies.

During the 2004-05 school year, over 10,000 international student-athletes competed for National Collegiate Athletic Association schools (NCAA, 2006b). Few researchers have examined how international student-athletes' college experiences compare to domestic student-athletes. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to adaptation to college, (b) to detect differences between international and domestic student-athletes in regards to their view of the purpose of college sports, and (c) to determine whether student-athletes' views on the purpose of college sport help predict social adjustment to college or institutional attachment. A national sample of international and domestic student-athletes from 11 NCAA Division I institutions completed an instrument comprised of the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales from the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (Baker and Siryk, 1989) and the seven factor scales from a modified version of the Purpose of Sport Questionnaire developed by Duda (1989). A total of 288 student-athletes completed the instrument, 174 of whom were international student-athletes representing 49 different countries. Results showed international student-athletes scored significantly lower on the social adjustment and institutional attachment scales compared to domestic studentathletes. Among the seven purpose of sport factors, only the factor of competitiveness revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, with international student-athletes ranking the factor lower than domestic student-athletes. None of the purpose of sport factors significantly predicted social adjustment to college for either domestic or international student-athletes. Several purpose of sport factors significantly predicted institutional attachment, however. A discussion of results and their implications are outlined.

Student-athletes' academic and athletic roles both require commitment, time, energy, and effort. Managing and balancing these multiple roles not only impacts student-athletes' use of time, but also their overall college experience. The purpose of this study was to explore how collegiate student-athletes perceive their academic and athletic roles. This study gives voice to student-athletes' perceptions of their multiple roles, provides insight on how they navigate these roles, and examines the intersections between athletic role, academic motivation, choice of major, and career decision-making processes. Qualitative interviews were conducted employing the constant comparative analytic method as a means to gain a meaningful understanding of how student-athletes perceive and experience their multiple roles. The study sample contained 18 (eight female and 10 male) student-athletes at Sunny Hills University (shu), a large 4-year public university in Southern California. A purposeful sample technique was employed resulting in participants being either sophomore, junior, or seniors on the following shu teams: Baseball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Golf, Women's Golf, Men's Outdoor Track, and Women's Outdoor Track. Five overarching themes emerged from the data regarding how student-athletes perceive their academic and athletic roles: (1) Two interconnected roles; (2) Part of an elite group; (3) Athletic role is more reinforced than academic role; (4) Sensitivity to stereotypes; and (5) Career decisions: a backseat to athletics. Implications for developing a theoretical or conceptual understanding of how Role Theory and in particular role conflict, affects student-athlete and how participants' viewed their academic and athletic roles as interconnected are also highlighted. Recommendations are provided for the ncaa, academic counselors, Athletic Departments, coaches, and faculty members with the goal of encouraging these different constituencies to understand areas where their behaviors could change in order to assist student-athletes with managing the multiple responsibilities, demands, and expectations of their role. Student Athlete Perception On A College Campus written by Michael McHugh and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Academic achievement categories.

Negative attitudes regarding a student-athlete's academic ability exist in the collegiate environment in the form of the "dumb jock" stereotype (Baucom & Lantz, 2001; Bosworth, Fujita, Jensen, & Simons, 2007; Sailes, 1993; McHugh Engstrom & Sedlacek, 1991). These attitudes and stereotypical images hinder a student-athlete's academic achievement (Chomitz, Dawson, Slining, McGowan, & Mitchelll, 2009; Aries, Benaji, McCarthy, & Salovey, 2004; Morphew, Toma, & Wolf-Wendel, 2001). The author conducted a study at a public, NCAA Division II university whose student-athletes had a proven and publicized history of academic success. The study examined if perceptions of collegiate student-athletes were congruent with those negative feelings towards the group identified in the research. The setting was selected because of the university's unique history of proven levels of academic success within the student-athlete population. Results found that a positive perception felt by the student-athletes from the campus community was congruent with the high level of student athletes' academic achievement.

Do College Athletes Learn From Racial Diversity In Intercollegiate Athletics written by Scott Hirko and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with categories.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether college athletes perceived that their exposure to racial diversity from within intercollegiate athletics was an important part of their education. Two NCAA Division I and one NCAA Division II institution in Michigan were surveyed, with 188 athletes participating. Athletes were asked to respond to 15 questions intended to measure perceptions of racial diversity within athletic teams and as athletes within the college environment. The results demonstrated that racial diversity within intercollegiate athletics was an important part of the education of student-athletes, both on teams with significant racial diversity (men's football, men's basketball) and for athletes on teams largely homogeneous in membership (such as men's golf or women's field hockey). Intercollegiate athletics is a useful way to provide opportunities for quality interracial interaction, which helps students to learn about multiculturalism and functioning in a diverse society. The unique nature of athletics with its common goals and cooperation provides an opportunity for individual athletes to be perceived as teammates first, and not first as members of a racial group. Looking at intercollegiate athletics through the lens of internalization and social contact theory helps us to learn that quality interracial interaction experiences from athletics can enhance cognitive development and provide new ways for athletes to learn about people who are different, to reduce prejudice, and to improve interracial understanding. This study demonstrated that higher education institutions should support intercollegiate athletics as a learning environment with potential for quality interracial interaction. Colleges and universities should consider maintaining, or enhancing, the recruiting of minority student-athletes to create additional opportunities for quality interracial interaction. In sum, the racial diversity of a college athletic team can positively impact each athlete's cognitive development and academic success. Appended are: (1) Web-based survey; (2) Initial email; (3) Follow-up email; (4) Reminder email; and (5) Mean scores of survey questions 1-15 categorized by independent variables. (Contains 4 tables.).
